So, I was always told that a person should drink cold water because the body burns calories in order to warm it. However, I've heard recently that it is better to drink room temperature water because the cold water solidifies fat and such and makes it hard for your body to utilize (or something along those lines). Has anyone heard anything about this?

i have heard different things about it and im sure you can google the info but i wouldnt get caught up in the details. its hard enough to drink the required water. i dont think the temp of the water is going to make dramatic differences in weight loss. if it did, the world would be thin.
oh and by the way welcome and congrats on the baby!

Thank you to you both. You're probably right about the temp really not mattering. When I think about it from that perspective, who cares if it does? I guess it is just more important to be drinking enough, warm or cold.

You are welcome. If you want, do an experiment, and see what happens. Have fun with it! Let me know the results. Personally, i drink room temp water and i believe cold does something to your metablism. But for me room temp water is easier to drink so id rather drink that-unless it is so hot out.

I looked it up on HowStuffWorks.com, because I have no earthly idea. Here's the link:

This is a really good question, and I'm gonna try and see how it turns out. One way or another, I'll be drinking more water than I am now.

Yes, drinking the recommended amount of water will do you good. Just be sure to keep it under a gallon per day.

To answer your question about water temperature, if you are drinking water with a meal, yes, it will make it more difficult to digest. One is for the reason you mentioned above and two, because water is a buffer, it will slow down the chemical process that is taking place in your stomach. Instead, drink your water at least a half hour before meals and at least an hour after meals.

In addition, if the water is cold, this will slow down your digestive process. Think about if someone came up behind you and dumped cold water on you. How would you feel? Your stomach has the same reaction--it tenses up and reduces blood flow, slowing down it's job.

So, if you must drink cold water, make sure it's on an empty stomach and make sure you won't be eating for a while. A positive side of this, is that it may make your feel less hungry. However, it is not wise to do this when you are actually eating.

I hope that helps.

I very much appreciate the link, Sonia. I read it and that is exactly what I've heard. But I have also just recently heard about what JR was saying. The thing is, I live in Arizona in the middle of the desert (literally) and cold water is very satisfying. It very much worries me that cold water slows down the digestive process. If this is the case, does the same rule apply to every cold beverage a person might drink with a meal? I am not seeing how I am going to be able to change this habit. I appreciate the info though.

Welcome, Nancy,

Another plus is that one is able to drink more water when it's not chilled.

I used to drink ice-cold water all the time, ('cause I liked it), but now the bottle's always on the counter, with a cold glass downed only during heat waves 'n such.
