Whenever I get a craving for salty snacks, I grab buttered popcorn flavored rice cakes. 50 calories can't be beat, really. And the other flavors are yummy, too.

Anyone else love rice cakes?

I LOVE em. I eat the Quaker ones, they always go on sale at my grocery stores so I can buy em for 99c each bag or 99c each bag of crispy minis.

My butter popcorn flavored ones are only 35 calories and the caramel is 50 calories and the butterscotch is only 60 calories. If I want an awesome in between meal snack, I grab a butterscotch 60 cal with a 40 cal yogourt and voila. A healthy and low cal snack.

something about that mouthful of light crunch that's so satisfying. And with tons of flavors to choose from, you can satisfy your sweet tooth or your salty cravings.

If I simply have to have salty and processed, these are a great choice. (I'm a fan of the buttery-salted as well.)

However, I have heard rumors about rice cakes having a mediocre score on the glycemic index --comparable to other processed grains, I suppose.

When this subject was raised in another forum, a poster made the point (which I've remembered and tried to apply) that nutritionally fruit offers more vitamins and fiber, and is less processed.

I got to try those flavored rice cakes this past summer, which I rather dug. Too bad they're not hip yet in these parts.

well ya they aren't really very nutritionally fulfilling if you will, it has like 1g of protein and no fiber and nothing else but if you want something that'll satisfy your cravings and not feel guilty about it, these are it!

and it definitly beats chips (in terms of health).

Soy crisps are really good too. Similar to rice cakes, but have a few more redeeming qualities in the nutrition dept.

They aren't as good for you as fruit, and honestly I prefer it, but sometimes I want something salty and won't take anything else. Better than chips, at least.

I'd love to try soy crisps. I like soy...anything. Makes people think I'm weird, but whatever. Anyone know where I can find them (none at PathMark, I'm sure)

My local big grocery store has a decent health food section and carry many types of soy crisps. I've also found them at the convenience store gas station of all places. Target has had them too, though they aren't always consistent in what they carry. They are turning up more and more places. Just cruise the chip aisle and really pay attention. You are certain to find them at a place like Whole Foods if you're lucky enough to have one nearby.

They are not a bid deal for a snack. I don't think they stop hunger, so I prefer other options.

Yes, I'd have to say they taste more like cardboard now. Cardboard with a touch of sugary or salty flavor maybe. But, I seem to be in the minority with this observation.

I like rice cakes but I tend to eat more than just one since they're so light. I like the lightly salted ones the best. Has anyone ever try them with any fruits or spreads?

I like rice cakes, or Wasas or whatever crisp bread with lo-fat cream cheese + natural prune spread. It's like a guilt-free cheesecake, well---sorrrrrrrrta...

I remember reading awhile back about white rice spiking your insulen levels. I tried finding that article but only came up with this:

http://fitnessblackbook.com/dieting_for_fat_loss/h ow-health-diet-foods-can-keep-you-from-burning-bod y-fat/

The excerpt in there states:
Can Healthy Diet Foods Cause Your Insulin Level to Spike?

Absolutely! Even low calorie diet foods can send your insulin levels through the roof. I used to think that sugar was the main enemy, but anything with white flower is bad (bagels, toast, etc.)…white rice is bad…those fat free rice cakes are the worst!

and in case you didn't know why insulin is bad:
You see when your insulin levels get too high, your body believes it has ample energy. Your body then begins to store body fat instead of burning fat.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I figured I would pass on the news so you don't load up on rice cakes thinking you are doing great. For a good salty snack pickles are decent, you may get a lot more sodium in your diet but it's tough satisfying a salt craving without that. Peanuts and almonds aren't bad if you keep the servings small... apparently nuts are digested differently than most foods and won't pack on the pounds (as long as you don't go crazy of course).

For a sweet craving, chocolate frozen bananas (quick recipe: cut banana in half at middle, stick popsicle stick in cut end, coat in chocolate shell sauce, roll in crushed peanuts and freeze)

sure dan, this could be bad. but i don't think anyone here is going to be eating an entire bag of rice cakes at once. one serving isn't going to cause your insulin to spike (talking out of my butt here, i have no references except for portion control sensibility here).

what i can't get over is how you talk about rice cakes having too much sugar, yet you turn around and suggest chocolate covered bananas? i like chocolate, and i like bananas... but there is a lot of sugar in both of those. for my sweet cravings, i have sugar free pudding with some cool whip stirred in.

Heheh, I don't think I've ever had more than 4 rice cakes in one sitting before, (usually 1-3 when I do)--I mean, they aren't THAT GOOD.

But knowing about "the dangers" will surely keep me from flippin' out and having any ricecake festivals in the future.

OMG. I don't remember seeing that, ever in my grocery stores. Sounds delish!!!

Some things just work perfectly together. Strawberry & kiwi. Strawberry & banana. Apple & cinnamon. Weight loss & Traineo.

no offense Dan, but I think that article is bull. And in a couple of months, you'll see an article stating the exact opposite (look at milk, carbohydrates, chocolate (not the sugary chocolate bars) etc, they all went through their it's good for you no it's bad for you phases. I don't even know where it is at now)

I'm chinese and have been eating white rice my whole life. And lots of it! A couple of bowls sometimes. And I'm nowhere being fat or anything. Look at all asians for that matter, we are far from being an obese nation.

So I don't really think it makes your body store fat or anything. I know there is "research" to back it up, but I'm sure there are tons that say the contrary. Just look at anti-perspirant causing breast cancer. Notice how the sites that state that also happen to sell deoderant?

Sketchy.

I could probably lose weight eating nothing but junk food for a month (not very nutritionally filling though, I know.. empty calories).

Point is, do what works for you. The only person responsible for success or failure is ourselves. If you want to stay away from anything with white flour and you lose weight, then that's great and you should do it!

Me, I've been eating white rice and bagels for the longest time. I'm healthy!

sorry for the rant. The whole white flour stuff may be true, or refined or unrefined sugar, but it's the same as diet soda's and stuff. If you can control yourself and whatever works, do it.
