I am 24, a student who also works full time. I'm a comp sci major, so I spend a decent amount of time with computers, but I'm also working on becoming a paramedic.
I am an obsessive counter. I always put things in order and organize them.
So calorie counting and working out to a specific regimen is easier for me than it is for most people. I at least get some serious motivation from utilizing websites to track this stuff.

Hey everyone, I'm kind of a junkie for tracking websites. I use nikeplus.com, fitday, traineo, thedailyplate, etc etc and the most consternation I've felt has been with the diet websites.
I like fitday.com because it breaks down where you are getting your calories from. But their inventory of items is kinda tiresome... there are a lot of times I find things missing and I can not find anyway to add them. The nutritional breakdown is amazing.. as long as its there.
But I have to say that I prefer thedailyplate.com very much. It has a tremendous library of items, and when you find something missing you can submit it. Enter all the information and you can use it right away, as soon as it gets approved everyone can see it. I think the website has a much nicer layout.
The big problem with thedailyplate.com though is that it does not give you a breakdown of where your calories are coming from. But for shorthand
Carbs & Protein = ~4 kcal/gram
Fat = ~9 kcal/gram
Alcohol = ~7 kcal/gram
Using these I figure it out and its within 5% of the correct values. Because thedailyplate has so much more info I am going to use that instead of fitday, and figure out percentages by hand.
Any feedback or opinions?

I have started two new blogs, one to follow my running and a Quest to a Marathon at blog.262quest.com and one to follow my weight loss at blog.2big.org, please check them out.
I am an IT professional / Developer which means I sit in front of a computer most of the day. This means very little exercise and plenty of time to eat.
I decided at the first of the year that I was going to lose weight. I started by changing my eating habits and started walking.
I did so for about a month and then added some weight lifting and started to run a little bit.
I have so far lost 29 lbs in just over 3 months and would like to lose just over another 50 lbs by the end of the year.
I have started running quite a bit more and am training to run the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th (10k)
I need all the encouragement I can get because to do this I am getting up every morning during the week at 4:30 to go running. With a wife and kids this is really the only time that I can consistently do what I need to do.
I am driven, but at times get a bit discouraged because I don't have anybody to work out with or run with.
All in All, I know I can do it, I just have to remember that when I don't do so well, it is in the past and what matters is going forward.

I have been adding custom items for months with www.fitday.com I couldn't use it without being able to add. You weren't able to find it? It is right in the very middle when you are adding the items:

Yea, I have thought about trying it many times, I just have invested so much time creating all my custom items that I really have gotten most of the stuff I eat in there already. I also like the way it breaks down the fat/carb/protein. I wish it would let me break it down by meal so I can glance and see what I ate for each meal.
One thing that has helped keep it easier is using www.dietfacts.com - they have an import feature into fitday that is really cool.

Thanks to this post I've now discovered TheDailyPlate. I use FitDay.com every day, one of the things that irritates me is having to log on every five minutes. So far TheDailyPlate looks pretty good but I'll update my evaluation after a reasonable period.
Update 1: I'm really starting to like TheDailyPlate as it is easier to look up foods (larger database among other things). It also has additional nice features. FitDay.com has a cleaner, less cluttered iterface. The larger and quite fast DailyPlate database is compelling.

Update 2: I have now switched over to TheDailyPlate and will not be going back to FitDay for some time, if at all. TheDailyPlate's database even found Starbucks Spinach Feta Croissant specifically. This extra power where one most needs it is the dealmaker.

I use and like Traineo very much but I don't see that as being relevant. What was being discussed and compared here were the calorie counters and their related databases on FitDay.com and TheDailyPlate.com, which is an aspect that Traineo does not deal with directly (other than the link to the USDA database which is quite weak). This particular thread was very helpful to me as are many of the threads on Traineo where different approaches to health are discussed. I don't see what this has to do with "traineo traitors," sheeesh. The way I see it is Michael N. R.(original post) suggesting a possible improvement to forum member's systems, and my confirmation that, in my opinion, TheDailyPlate's MyPlate calorie counter is outstanding.

i Slappy
I'm a slappy geek (IT Systems Analyst at work, Gadget lover at play) and ready to do something to change my state of slappiness...time to de-slappify myself.
Unfortunately, my love for all things tech is, by it's nature, a very sedentary lifestyle which has lead me down the path of being slappy (overweight/obese, in case you were curious). After having three different doctors strongly urge me to lose weight and a blood pressure reading of 190/110...this new path became an absolute must.
I've joined the Weight Watcher ranks and found it to be a great gateway to my 'lifestyle change'. It has been a tremendous help to reducing my calories, while helping get in my daily intake of fruits, vegetables, calcium, water, omega-3's, etc...
As for fitness, I have been using my eliptical trainer at home because running outdoors was a little harsh on my knees. This has helped to ease my hand off the TiVo remote and onto the home exercise equipment. I now watch digitally recorded shows while huffing and puffing. =P
I look forward to meeting new and interesting people on here and finding new 'thinspirations' and motivators.

I got the greatest advise either on here or on the Weight Watcher forums @ Boot Camp Buddies, but one user advised putting FitDay Desktop version on a USB drive. This way you can take your database wherever you go and quickly plug in and update. This has worked wonders for me. I can update at work, at home or wherever I have access to a computer.
This has kept me a FitDay user for life, especially now that I have created so many custom meals (multiple ingredients) and custom items. Plus, you have all the mood logs, diaries, custom reports, & custom goals down to specific nutrient min/max. I highly recommend using the product in this way.
Not sure if this helps contribute to the thread, but thought it was worth mentioning.
