whey v. non-whey protein shakes...what's the difference?
I am lactose intolerant and I believe whey is lactose-free or lactose-reduced
I' am trying to lose 11 pounds and I usually drink one mid-morning and the other one at 3 pm. I workout about 5 times a week (cardio 60 to 90 mins)
Thanks!

Whey is one of the most bio-available forms of protein and gets to your muscles quickly and efficiently, which is ideal for post workout recovery meals.

Casein protein drinks are slow release protein sources so take a while to digest. This type of source would normally be taken just before bed. There are some lnks between casein and adverse conditions though I don't honestly know anymore than that.

Soy is considered healthy, though I personally leave it alone except in small doses. As far as I am aware it promotes oestrogen levels and lowers testosterone which inhibits hypertrophy and aids catabolism and weight gain when consumed too much.

That's about the limit to my knowledge on protein shake sources, except for good whole food that is....

There is also Hemp protein, which is very good for you, and provides Omega 3s and 6s.
There is rice protein, soy, and a whole plethora of others. I'd suggest a google search on protein powders or protein suppliments.

Okay, the question I have relates to protein shakes. Has anyone else had a problem with extreme bloat/constipation from whey protein shakes? I just started this week doing the protein shake thing. I'll do light vanilla soy milk, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder and 1-2 tbsp of reduced fat peanut butter. Any comments or suggestions?? Thanks in advance.

Probably the soy milk. Try whey protein powder and use water as a liquid. Soy is good but in small amounts. Read this.

I use Lactaid milk for my shakes, plus the whey for protein.
I also add a yogurt serving, frozen fruits, some raw oatmeal, and the Omega 3 powder.

I usually make enough to have a 10oz glass before I workout and one an hour after I am done working out.

peanut butter causes bloating, so does dairy.
im lactose and tolerant too, i use lactaid, and fat free dannon yogurt-really watered down so it doesn't affect me, and just normal whey powder. whey does have lactose in it, but if you're not getting an upset stomach from it, you'll be fine

For those having bloating problems: The recommended liquid size for one scoop of whey is anywhere from 4-8oz, you don't need a full 12oz glass to mix a 20-24g scoop in.

If you are having trouble with the whey saturating, get this http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/vm/drink.html
