Hello all,
I posted around 5 weeks ago about how weight loss was impossible for me but with your advice: since then I've managed to lose around 15 lbs, I've been working my balls off for it. Walking to work, 5 hours swimming a week, 2 hours weights and a few hours of running here and there and basic calorie control. I'm so proud of myself. I'm even finding I can eat 'normally' now and still lose weight very fast.

But I have a few concerns.

First of all I want to start gaining muscle but to do this I need to start increasing my calorie intake, obviously not calories from crap like potato chips etc. will this mean the remaining fat I have will stay on me? SHould I burn the fat first? then start gaining muscle?

another thing is that is the loss too fast to keep it off? I'm not starving myself so I don't think this should be a problem but I would hate to see all my hard work amount to nothing !

as always thanks for your help.

Gaining muscle whilst you are still losing weight shouldn't be a problem -- just so long as you continue doing your cardio-type workouts to keep the fat coming off. After all, once the muscle is built up, that will need fuelling, so should stip out a few more calories.
Just remember that muscle is heavier than fat. If you find your weight going up, but your leanness improving (with no extra fat), don't fret!

As for getting rid of all that weight so quickly, if you're not starving yourself, you should be alright. However, 3lbs/week is quite a lot (I fear a reasonable proportion of that will be water, too), so you might want to monitor your weight closely, otherwise it may blow back up... Remember, dieting and exercising isn't just a quick fix -- it requires a permanent change in lifestyle to keep up.

Well stated Chris!

If you want to be healthier you need to consider your weight loss, diet, and exercise as a lifestyle change. Some people think that once the lose the weight and meet their goal that they can eat anything they want... I know from personal experience, however, once you lose the weight you will need to continue eating healthy and exercisizing on a regular basis.

Muscle does weigh more than fat, by far... However, you will notice subtle changes when you gain muscle in your clothes. Also at this point your the new muscle will need food so it will look towards that fat for its fuel. Once you have muscle built it will also raise you "resting calorie rate" (not sure of the correct term right off the top of my head), but your metabolism will burn more fat at rest when you start to build muscle.

I'm pretty sure I've dropped more than 15lbs in fat because i've gained so much in muscle just from swimming, mainly in my arms.

I'm pretty sure i've got my diet sorted out, when I started loads and loads of drinking water thats when I started the weight sliding off

I'm not looking for a quick fix at all, my newer, healthier lifestyle suits me perfectly, I feel great...more active and I can't stand being inside..I went for a 4 mile walk today with my girlfriend even though it's pouring with rain outside.

I can't believe that 6 weeks ago i used to spend so much time indoors watching TV!
