I'm supporting my wonderful man as he embarks on his journey of becoming physically fit. I love fitness and try to engage in vigorous exercise every single day. It makes you feel even more amazing than you end up looking! I would love to motivate others who are looking for a little push!

...It makes my head hurt! I am looking for a PRE-workout energy bar. I really want something to propel my workout through the roof! Does anyone have a favorite brand/flavor that really makes a difference? Or any other coveted snacks to boost energy beforehand?

My weight has gone up and down repeatedly in the last few years. I managed to lose a lot of weight before getting married 2 years ago, but have since gained most of it back.
I hope to find new motivation on this site, and hopefully make some new friends. This time I want to lose weight and keep it off. I'm trying to not think of it as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.

I try going with foods with natural sugars, especially fruit. I've read that eating an apple in the morning wakes you up better than a cup of coffee. Likewise, eating an apple or other piece of fruit before a workout helps boost my energy.

Remember that the term 'energy bar' is a very misleading term. Any food that contains calories contains energy, so the title essentially means nothing.
More importantly, almost all these 'energy' bars are loaded with sugar which will rob you of energy aby causing a 'sugar spike' in your blood sugar levels (this sees your energy levels rapidly rise and then fall as your body releases a surge of insulin to moderate the change).
Brandon's suggestion is a good idea, but any slow-release energy that works for you can make a real difference. This goes down to personal choice etc, but low-sugar cereals (eg muesli, porridge, bran flakes), nuts, fruit etc should ensure you dont run out of steam halfway through your workout.

I'm Steve. I am trying to get back into shape, I ran cross country for all 4 years of high school. I am currently a junior in college at RIT. My BMI is right on the border of normal and overweight. I am pretty muscular but I would still like to see that number drop. At 189 lbs I will have a "normal" BMI. I enjoy working out and run/bike daily as well as weight lift. I know they say you shouldn't bulk while dieting but it's been working for me. I started this summer at 220lbs (extra weight from living @ college) and am now down to just about 200lbs.. hope to break into the 190s soon.

I was looking at energy bars today when I went to buy some more Whey protein. I noticed not only are they all loaded with sugar but also with saturated fat. I'd try to steer clear and try to find a natural alternative as the two people above me said.

One bar that I like is the Lara bar. It's natural, with just fuit and nuts as the ingredients. I may have that with some beef jerky for a snack.
In general, try to eat "real foods" rather than bars and shakes.

For anyone who's interested, I did a bit of independent research and found ClifBars to be great. They have all organic ingredients and release energy slowly to avoid "sugar crash." I tried them all last week and they seemed to be akin to my normal banana before a workout, maybe even a little better. And they taste a lot better than that PowerBar crap.
Thanks for everyone's comments!

i'd have to say I haven't tasted a ClifBar I didn't like. Great suggestion. Sometimes you can find them at various stores for $1 each. (I saw them one time at 7-11 for 2 for $1.50!)
