My suggest calorie intake seems to change alot, from 3200 to 2700, is ths normal? And what is it based on? I've tried eating that much but sometimes its just alot of food, and i dont feel good the day after...
I been eating about 2000 to 2200, and feel much better. 2 days ago I started eating no sugars/carbs, and feel alot better, but occasionally hungry at night, and early AM.
Does this sound like a good idea?

I'm also curious where the suggested calorie intake guideline is coming from. It seems high to me, and it's definitely over what I'm actually shooting for.

I agree, it way to much for me and I can't enter less calories than the suggested amount. I have send the staff a PM about this on the 23th but didn't received a reply yet.

I mentioned this almost 2 weeks ago when I first signed up. They said that a fix was in the works. They have been making A LOT of changes around here, so give them some time. They have talked about being able to have a custom calorie box where you hand enter the calories. I think that is a good solution as well as possibly having a slider from 0 to the max. (0-4500 or so for myself)

Hi All,
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner on this one - we've been truly inundated with requests for additional functionality and enhancements, and this one is high on this list of 'things coming soon' - we hope to have a custom calories option ready by the end of the day.
With regards to the calorie range being presented - we have to be very careful with what we recommend - we can't really endorse undereating. The values we present are calculated based upon your current weight, height, weight goal and gender. They're intended to produce a controlled weight change, rather than a rapid shift, and it's possible to maintain your calorie intake at a fairly high level if it's combined with sensible eating.
In any case, as it stands, you should be always shooting for the value on the far right of the scale - we're going to add a feature to enter custom calories, but there will be some degree of penalisation if you fall well below your recommended intake.
Thanks!
Maxwell

That's just the thing. I don't think I should be penalized for eating a 2000 calorie diet like my doctor suggests, just because of some calculation. I happen to have a low heart rate which directly affects my metabolism, and having a calculation which does not keep that in mind determine a penalty for "undereating" at the level that my doctor specifies, well, it seems to be a little off kilter.
I know there are tons of legal reprocussions for suggesting undereating, but you don't have to suggest it. You could pop up a warning to the member entering the information, that your calculation is much lower, but I am not sure about penalizing someone is the answer. Just because there are so many other factors that the calculation do not keep in mind.

Aaron, totally agreed, hence we're going to be adding the ability for you to specify a custom calorie goal later today. The legal factor is an issue, but by allowing you to specify your own goal cals it gives you the freedom to work towards whatever it is you need to work towards.
Thanks!

I am a contractor for a monolithic IT firm. This translates into a lot of time spent sitting. I have always been a big guy, but I am tired of being obese so I am going to utilize the power of community to hold my feet to the fire to stay active.

Not sure about everyone else but I have found the formula here to be very encouraging. My goal is to come under the far right hand mark. Not stupid low, but everything over is a subtraction from the "Perfect 10" day. So I guess I am not having a problem with it so much.

Well, where can I start? I joined up to this site because I need to get off my lazy butt and start being more active! I am currently battling against my obsessions with video games, pizza and sugar but I am hoping to make a difference to my lifestyle, my energy levels, and my body.

Is there any way to find out how many calories you should be intaking based on your height/weight?
I would be grateful for links or info.

Hi Kryssa,
The low end figure that is automatically suggested for you is based upon your height and weight, and weight goal - it's intended to result in a controlled sustainable loss/gain.
Thanks,
Maxwell

I would like to reach a preliminary goal weight of 65kg and then assess my true goal weight. I've been slimmer than that but I'm working out a lot more these days and I know muscle weighs more than fat.

I have the opposite problem! My suggested calorie intake is 1600, which doesn't seem like much. I haven't actually counted what I'm eating because I use go by serving size and GI value instead but I thought most recommendations were for 2000-2500 calories per day for a woman.

While changes are being made, I would also like to suggest that you can choose between calories and kilojoules (just like you can choose to measure your weight in pounds or kilograms). In Australia, food labels only list kilojoules.
Preferably it would be good if you can bow out of the calorie counting thing altogether. Some diets aren't based on calorie counting and some people don't need to lose weight but would still find this site helpful for logging work outs etc.
