I am 26. College, stress, 21 meal plan... all caused me to go from 180 to 320. I realize I will probably never be 180 again but I think 250 is a very reasonable goal. My photo is a reminder to me that my body CAN be smaller and I CAN survive without massive amounts of food.

I know jumpstarting your metabolism in the morning is very important but what if you were faced with this scenario:
1 Chocolate Pop Tart Pastry OR no breakfast. What would YOU do?

Train as a bodybuilder. Aiming for 16 1/2 stone at 8% bodyfat, currently about 14 stone 10 at 14%.

Why are you even discussing this scenario? Pop tarts are out of the question..they are a pile of crap.
If you are going to eat 2 hours later ANYWAY, then i'd say no pop tart, if you aren't eating for 3 - 5 hours, then definitely have it.

Working a lot makes it very easy to come up with excuses as to why I can't work out or eat healthy. It's time to end the excuses, get out there, enjoy some workouts and eat healthy foods. I'm hoping that Traineo can help.

Most of the advice I have heard recommend a *healthy* breakfast. Right now because I suck at getting up in the morning I have a Clif Bar and a bottle of water.

Breakfast got a lot easier when I started eating instant oatmeal. I know it is not the greatest but it is better than a Poptart. Most of us have a water coolers at work. The red tap has water hot enough to get the oatmeal prepared.
Now that I am starting a morning workout routine I am going with a protein shake after the workout and oatmeal a couple hours later when I am in the office.
It keeps my fiber intake up and it doesn't taste bad.
Now if I can get on the ball I will start making steel-cut oats before hand and freezing it in a tupperware container. When I get to work throw it in the microwave and bam I have a healthy fiber rich breakfast. A tip here is you can add egg white to the oats when you are cooking them to up the protein level. It is not instant but it is tasty and better than instant for you.

I'm a network engineer in the Great Northwest and I co-host a podcast at geekfit.com with Jason Tucker (abstrakone).
When I started this journey in March 2005 I weighed around 400 lbs.
The thing that jarred me into motion was a picture my wife had taken on Christmas morning 2004. I was sitting in a low armchair wearing my usual outfit: sweats and a t-shirt. It went from belly to legs to feet -- no knees!! I said, "oh hell no."
I got myself a gym membership and started out swimming every morning. That progressed to the treadmill and finally to where I am today which is riding a bike 7-10 miles at a clip and playing DDR at the local bowling alley a few days a week.
It feels so good I think I'm going to keep going. ;)

Where in nature are you going to find a single chocolate pop tart pastry and *nothing* else to eat? I think it's time to throttle whomever stocks your pantry.

Well, I am faced with this situation sort of and I imagine alot of other people who are starting a lifestyle change are as well. I have enough self control to not tear through a box of poptarts but I don't see the purpose of throwing away a brand new box. What do you do with the "bad" food? Throwing/giving it away just doesn't make budget sense, because we are building a house and money is really tight.

Until January 2006, I am the definitive geek / couch potato. I was overweight and felt sluggish. Now diet exercise is part of my life and I love it!
I'd love to motivate and be motivated to continue this new me. Thanks for you help and support!

Consider trading food with someone. I once traded some "bad" food for "good" food with someone who had to eat it because his wife made him lol.
Or bring the "bad" food to the office, offer it for free, and build likeability. I did that too.
Hope this helps.

Hi! I have been training for around 8 months now, and was able to put on some weight. I am trying to gain more 8 kg in 6 months. Around 1.3 kg for month and at the same time reduce my bodyfat by 3%, currently at 16% right now. One of my main problems is having very bad eating habits, still before I started weight training I used to be a very skinny guy. If you have a common goal send me a message, maybe we can share some ideas. All the best!

I would eat breakfast, and! the Pop Tart!. :D
We don't have those treats were I live... Pop tart... sounds good!
Personaly It's impossible for me to eat properly after I wake up, I don't feel hungry at all. I just have a 33cl of milk with chocolate powder, then 1.30h later a proper breakfast.
You must have at least a carton of milk.

You must not work in a geek shop. Around my office you bring in anything sweet and all you would see is an empty spinning box 2 minutes after declaring it "free for all."

Definitely bring unwanted junk food to the office. I love to bake but really, having two dozen cupcakes in my house is a BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD idea, so, if I bake something, I bake in the evening and pack it up in the go-to-the-office tupperware as soon as it's cool. Plus, you get -- forgive me -- brownie points from your coworkers if you feed them. :-)
But, in answer to the original question... it would depend on what my options were and how long it was going to be until I ate for real. If that was what you had from getting up at 6AM until a noon lunch... yeah, I'd eat it, probably somewhere around 9:30, 10AM. It's only 200 calories, it's not like it's a huge commitment. It's not great, but it's also not worth beating yourself up over.

1 poptart is only 25 cals, just gradually eat your poptarts if you do not really want to give them away.
And yes breakfast is important, IMO. As mentioned above by Nick Richards, if I was to last up to 3+ hours with no food, then I am downing at least 4 poptarts and some water.
Of course, avoid the poptarts, goes without saying.

I am going to slowly get rid of them... Once they are gone, they are gone... No more "piles of crap" Nick! Thanks for the help guys and gals. Any ideas other ideas for a low calorie breakfast ideas? NM, I will make a new topic for that...

I know that Pop Tarts are not the greatest thing to eat for Breakfast, but if you eat only one and have some water, it is better that not eating. I think that you need to watch what you eat the rest of the day to make up for the Pop Tart.
Granola Bars, friut, cereal bars,go gurts, these may all be better choices that you can eat on the go. I saw let yourself enjoy your food a little, or you might fail.
P.S. Poptarts are 100 calories each. Not 25.

Hey,
as jessy said , they are 100, not 25, mostly from sugars.
Good to see your moving on Justin. Another idea for a low calorie breafast would be to have 1 whole egg, 6 egg whites on 1 slice of wholemeal toast. In fact, that an excellent start to the day in terms of protein...
In regards to food already in your pantry.....
It might be expensive, but throwing it away, or just giving it away at work, is actually a really good psychiological process of 'leaving the past behind'. I suggest you rifle through your cupboards and fill a big box with everything you can't eat, and give it to a children's home or soup kitchen...

i've always wanted to be healthy and in shape, but been too lazy to really do it...until now. something in me finally said: "hey cindy. it's time to get your shit together." so i did. and i feel great.
i am currently on hiatus from my studies at columbia university in new york city. i'm a sociology major and hope to do my thesis and graduate work on the complex relationship between humans and drugs. i hope, ultimately, to split my time between tenured professorship, musicianship, and mothership.

That is actually a very good point. This is why rituals like weddings & christenings have so much psychological power still today. Throwing bad food away is a ritualistic behavior that will shock your psyche. It reminds me of what were, and that you are now no longer that person. It is a powerful indicator that something permanent inside you has changed for the better.

I'm a typical stress eater, and I've been extremely stressed out for the past two years. Yeah, recipe for disaster! I can't say I look too bad, and the 22 fat kilos I want to lose to get back to my original weight do make me more curvaceous, but let's face it - it's just not who I am. To feel comfortable again, I definitely want to lose those extra kilos!
I'm mainly using Traineo to get some feedback, and to be able to keep track of my exercise. I only use the diet log sporadically, as the food itself isn't really my problem, but rather my notion of food as something that reduces stress.

THROW AWAY THE BOX OF POP-TARTS! IMMEDIATELY!
Seriously, the first step in starting on a decent diet should be cleaning out the cupboards and the fridge. Make a complete diet for the week, shop on the Saturday, cook whatever you want to have in the freezer or keep prepared in the fridge for the week, and on Monday you can start a new life, pretty hassle-free.
The cost of the food? Well, imagine how much your non-healthy diet has already cost you - and then consider how much you'll save eating much less.
Also - eating healthy is an INVESTMENT in YOU. Eating unhealthy food is the opposite - it's simply paying to hurt yourself.
