Have you ever noticed what actually constitutes a serving or portion?

I always thought I couldn't eat enough to satisfy the number of servings for each food group of the pyramid without gaining a ton of weight.

But today I used the website www.mypyramid.gov and their new menu planner tool. I found it really difficult to plan meals for a day that didn't exceed at least two of the food groups.

I challenge any of you to use the same tool and come up with a daily meal plan that fits all the categories and then please share it with us all.

To be honest, I do not think the food pyramid is applicable. The reason they recommend different foods from separated categories is because most food in each group has something "different" to offer, whether it be fiber, vitamins or protein. I do eat food from most categories, but I do not think it is essential to eat from every category. I have what I feel is a good diet, and I get 100% or more of basically every vitamin, protein and fiber.

Hey Matt, thanks for the post.

I'm also not concerned with eating everything the pyramid says I need in a day. However, it did make me realize just how small a portion or serving actually is.

Ha ha, don't we all!

I usually laugh when I look at the back and see what is considered a serving.

Example: Double Stuffed Oreo cookies 2 cookies is one serving. HA! I have never in my life just eaten two cookies, nor have I ever eaten them without a glass of milk to dip them in and fat-free milk just doesn't do it when you are talking about dunking cookies!

I am starting to realize however that if we did pay attention to actual portion sizes it's pretty easy to get your 5+ servings a day of veggies and fruit.

For instance, one 6oz bagel is actually equal to 6 servings of grains according to the food guide pyramid. I think at the most I would have thought one bagel was two servings of grains.

Anyway, I found an interesting article on portions and servings.

Go by what the box/container says. Trust me, it's a serving. And believe it or not, you CAN live with it!!!
