Find a time that really works out best for you. A lot of people suggest getting it out of the way as soon as you wake up, but for me, it's a much better experience doing it after work. Experiment with different times and see how your body reacts to them. Then, once you find a good time, stick with it.

Must get back down to me fightin' weight, darned stoopid holidays and their tasty treats...
Fer reel: A couple years ago I dropped from 200 to 120, and since I've been "maintaining" ... which has turned into a slight, slow gain. School leaves me with an excuse to not work out, and that has lead to my weight creeping up. After 20 pounds I fought hard to get off the first time I'm saying no more and working my fat bum back down into the 120s where it belongs.
I prefer lifting heavy but I've learned to not hate "cardio" and have even taken up running... sorta.
Of course, my fave pastimes are usually sedentary, my art, gaming, etc... But I can get over that.

The best time to work out is whenever you'll actually work out. Experiment and find a time you can stick to. Often just out of bed or just home from work (or on the way home from work) work well for people because then they don't have the time to let other things get in the way and give them an excuse to slack off. (They have yet to plant butt on couch and get sucked into CSI for the night...)
Eat when you get up, and every few hours after that. Keep your metabolism revved with lots of small meals throughout the day. Either make your meals all equal, do 3 main "meals" and a few snacks, or front-load your day with a bigger breakfast and smaller dinner. Any of those work well for people.
My husband eats 6 times a day. I either eat 5 or I just graze throughout the day when I'm home. Don't go too long without food, you'll crash, feel tired, then be more likely to binge when you do eat.

"Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that."

I'll echo what others say -- experiment a bit and stick with whatever time feels most comfortable for you.
However, don't be afraid to shake it up a bit every now and then too. I was convinced I was not a morning person, but I found I enjoy running in the morning and it's a great way to boost my energy sans caffeine. If you'd have told me a year ago I'd be exercising in the morning, I'd have thought you were crazy. And if you had tried to take my coffee away a year ago, I'd have had to hurt you.
I lifted weights after work, and it was really tough because I was tired and just wanted to go home and rest. It wasn't easy, but it was a little easier than mornings so I stuck to it. Unfortunately, you may never find a time that's easy and you may have to settle for least-backbreaking. The good news is that your body adapts and in a while (for me, two years) it will get easier. I wouldn't have made it without my gym partner of four years though.

A Bengalooru-hudugi at heart, I live in the US South, the mecca of all things fried and beautiful! I generally eat healthy and live a healthy life, but have my share of guilty pleasures and sources of stress that contribute to gaining weight. I gain and lose weight easily (well, gain more easily than lose!). Motivation is my biggest challenge...So it has helped that my partner and I have a pact to hit the gym regularly--the last 2 months have been fairly consistent. Aka, lack of motivation has been transformed into codependence! But, as they say, why change what works;-) Here's to staying motivated by the pursuit of good health and a better quality of life.

Depends on your energy levels: Either go to the gym at the end of your shift on your way home, or go after you wake up during the day.
I did a quick search on night shift work and nutrition
There's some general advice there,
Good luck!
