Hi there,

My name is Shannon and I'm a food addict....which is stopping NOW!! I just found this website and already addicted to reading all the great support and help this community has offered to others. I'm in my second week of Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet which was recommended by my doc due to my ever soaring Chol numbers and blood pressure. So, it was time to start doing something!! I have a total of 66 pounds I would love to see gone!! I will be celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary in Ireland in September and would like to only take up one seat on the plane across the pond!! So far I have dropped 9 lbs.....which for me is very exciting!!

Please send me all kinds of kind words and great motivation!! I live for praise!! LOL!!!

Thanks again,

Your New Member ~ Shannon

Hi Shannon,
I'm new too. I'm trying to stick on a low carb, and I'm having a really hard time. I need to lose 40 lbs...I've tried atkins, but I found the first two weeks really hard to stick to. I go to the gym everyday, and have for the past month, I have yet to lose a pound!
Help

Penny, how is your food intake looking? Also, what types of exercises and at what intensity are you doing them when you go to the gym? The answers to those questions might give you some insight into why you haven't lost any weight.

Shannon, I can completely relate to being a food addict, although for me it's more of an emotional connection. The South Beach diet is VERY hard. I remember doing it a year or two ago for about a month and I lost like 14 pounds in the first 2 weeks. Now I don't even remember the specifics of it. Mind refreshing my memory?

Good luck. I'm sure you can do it. Keep us updated. You're doing great so far!

Hi Cardio King....thanks for the luck!! I really appreciate it!! Well, the 1st 2 weeks is the hardest of the program...no fruits, limited vegetables, no bread at all, no rice, no potatoes....basically its a crash diet with no carbs!!! And the worse....no ice cream!! LOL!!! I'm not doing to bad... I eat eggs and Canadian bacon for breakfast, alot of non-fat string cheese, salad w/ chicken for lunch, sugar-free gelatin, and then for dinner a meat of somesort and usually green beans or squash, tomatoes... anything on the "allowed" list.. I'm eating!! I'm learning there are other things to eat besides fast food!! Imagine that!! LOL!!! I'm also finding that I can't eat as much as I use to...I think by shrinking my portion sizes my stomach in return is also shrinking a bit. I was also told by my doc to up the fiber intake it helps you feel fuller and keeps the hungry down.

Hi Penny!! See my earlier posting to Cardio King.... perhaps its a fiber issue or as my doctor says...."MORE WATER!!!" Good luck!! I'm right there with you!!! I'm having lots of luck on South Beach....however, I can't wait for Phase 2 - then I can start adding some of my fruit back in!!! However, still no white potatoes, white rice....basically nothing with alot of sugar!!! South Beach is more of a low-carb, low-fat, low-sugar diet....In Phase 2 I can even add back in my sweet potatoes!! Yippee!!!

Maybe I need to step back a few paces. I'm drinking lots of water, but did not cut out any fruit what so ever on the low carb program. I'm really good during the day, but late at night, I crave popcorn, and I have to find a way to stop myself eating it. (and it's not just air popped, or a cup full)
I'm on the treadmill running 3 miles a day, doing weights, haven't cut out any coffee, which I drink to much. Do you have a link to the south beach diet? or is it a book you're reading.?

Hi Cardio King,
Maybe my intensity is not enough at the gym. I run, walk, on the treadmill have started to do some weights, but I don't think I do enough.

Hey Penny,

I actually have the book. Its pretty good at explaining everything and how the sugars and carbs work in our bodies. It also has the listing of what to avoid during the different phases. As far as the coffee goes - no way am I cutting that out!! I wouldn't make it to work...however, I have switched my sugar to Splenda and I use non-fat milk. The prob with fruit is its loaded with sugar...especially bananas!! They are the worse - and my favorite!! I could scan the "approved list" and e-mail it to you if you want. That might help get you started again. My next step is to get my butt back to the gym!! Now that I've got my eating somewhat under control time to add a little sweat to my routine!!

I think the best bet is just following a healthy diet, eating 5-6 times per day, and exercising. I find those books to be good sources of information, on understanding what you are eating, but if a diet has a name, I stay the hell away from it - a name is just a way to market something.

I use non-fat milk

This has a surprising amount of sugar!

I do limit my sugar - basically nothing that has added sugar... However, I eat at least 2 pieces of fruit a day (usually a banana), have multigrain bread and veggies, lean protein, etc. Fruit is loaded with fructose - somewhat different from sucrose - and also fiber, vitamins, and minerals.

I remember reading about the Atkins diet... I was thinking "... this is ridiculous - it's very unhealthy! But it WILL work!" What was good about the abundance of the low or no - carb diets is that they caused people to learn more about the kinds of things they were eating.

So, get rid of added sugar, soda, 'white' carbs (potatoes, rice, bread). Eat more protein, good fats, and good carbs! Do weight training 2-3x per week, get some cardio 3-5X/week, and make it challenging! You'll soon be part of the many success stories here at Traineo.
