Hello,

I have been a member of Traineo for a while, but only ever exercised for a couple of weeks off and on.

Growing up, my nickname was 'string bean'. Up until I was 19 I weighed ~150lbs at 6'1". When I moved out and went to college, the freshmen 20 quickly became the freshmen 80. I peaked at 255lbs last August. As of a few weeks ago before I started training I weighed in at 243lbs.

Like many others, I decided my New Years resolution was to lose weight. I knew I had a history of giving up on this goal. This time, something had to change. I decided to sign myself up for the NYTC Central Park Triathlon. This way, there is a set date that my goal needs to be reached. By August 10, 2008, I WILL be in shape and I WILL compete in a sprint triathlon!

So far, I have completely stopped eating fast food, try to eat sensibly without going on any kind of fad-diet, and workout 3-5 times a week. When I weighed myself this week, I was down 234lbs for a weight loss of 9lbs!

I feel great about the way things are going. The thought of giving up has never entered my mind. I want to be healthy. I want be active. I want to go to New York City. And I want to kick ass in that triathlon!

Little by little, everything changes. (If we want it to.)

Welcome, Joseph,

Here's to your road to the tri. being a smooth and productive one.

This is a nice place to learn and log while the new choices become habits.

I did my first sprint tri last year. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. I used the free plan at BeginerTriathlete.com as a guide for my training. I also used the JUDDD diet plan to help me lose weight. Please ask questions as they come up. The folks on this site really have some great advice.

1. Buy some good running shoes.
2. Follow the training plan (don't get crazy)
3. Track your calorie intake by counting calories (it's not fun but it's what works)

I could go on but you probally know all this stuff. JUST ASK if you have questions.

Good Luck and keep training

Its great to know I can ask advice of people who have been in my shoes and have already accomplished soo much.

Joe, I did find BeginnerTriathlete.com and plan to follow a 22wk couch-to-sprint plan. For now, I'm just doing my best to cut weight and get in shape. I have been following a couch-to-5K run schedule, and have signed up for a intro running clinic at my local Running Room store. I plan to run a 5K race in the Mississauga Marathon in May.

Training for a Triathlon has a huge learning curve for a once sedentary software developer like myself. I'm sure I will have lots of questions for you down the road.
