be sensible. you cant rush off the weight or else you will gain it back once again. lose weight the right way so that it will stay off. do the best you can do now before you have surgery. you cant make up for the time you will be out while in surgery. while you are out of commission, that will be the time you need to focus on your diet. why dont you try to get your diet under control now as well? why dont you try doing some upper body exercises? has your doc giiven you permission to exercise? if so, start doing the exercises you are allowed to do but whatever you would be able to maintain reasonably after your surgery.

im sure its tough to not be able to do what you want in terms of exercise but at least you can lift weights so focus on doing your weight training now and working really hard with that. in terms of diet, why dont you focus on really getting that under control? you could bring food with you, bring a cooler with you, prepare meals, bring snacks, carry water, make meals on the weekends. there are always ways to make it work if you want it bad enough.

i can only do upper body...

If you are able to get a Gym membership maybe you could use the rowing machine to get some cardio in using your upper body.

There's lots of cardio you can do with your upper body. There's the hand bike machine and you can do bag work or do the bag work with out the bag, rowing machine like Jeff said, lifting smaller weights and doing more and quicker reps. Like Jennifer (the new me) said, if you want it bad enough, you will make it happen.

Hope your knee gets better.

That would suck.
