Hi - I'm Kate, just joined yesterday!

I relosing 32lbs I managed to regain since September.

I'm following low carb intermittent fasting, and trying to add in cardio and weight workouts. Are there any intermittent fasting threads/groups here?

I'm excited this morning - I lost 4.2 lbs since yesterday! Granted, much of this is water weight, but it's still nice to see a lower number. More importantly, I went to the gym this morning, did 30mins on the elliptical.

Onwards and downwards...

Hi Kate and welcome to traineo. It's great here. You'll learn tons and get some excellent support as well.

I'm not sure what intermitten fasting is, so I can't help you on that front. Congrats on the weight loss!

Let us know how things progress for you

Hi Kate, and welcome!! As Cardio has already mentioned, this site is an awesome resource for information and support

I'm not clear on intermittent fasting, but you might want to check out our JUDDDD group, it is active and there are a lot of knowledgable and dedicated traineo-ers there! Additionally, though I don't do JUDDDD, it seems like it is nutritionally sound and a lot healthier (and easier to maintain) than simply a low-carb solution.

intermittent from webster means coming and going at intervals; not continues
So I am assuming it is a fast this week don't fast next, or days etc.

Thanks for all the welcoming words!

Intermittent fasting is when you fast for a period (usually greater than 18 hours) and then have an eating window. So, I stopped eating yesterday at 4:30pm, and didn't eat anything until 6pm today - a fasting time of 25 hours (longer than usual for me).

It's called "intermittent" because although you are fasting, you're still eating every day.

Different people do different fasting and eating window ratios, so you could do a 20 hour fast followed by a 4 hour eating window, for example.

Oh, I forgot to add, it's very similar to the Up Day/Down Day approach in terms of other health benefits in addition to weight loss and appetite control. So I'll definitely be checking out the JUDDDD group Dave, thanks for the tip!

Ara - that's totally what I thought too. I love to eat, and I never thought I'd be able to go this long without eating anything. I've been completely surprised by the way IF takes away my appetite. Before starting this approach I would have been climbing the walls and been super grouchy if I didn't eat for even six hours awake. Now I'm pretty chilled out about it...something I never thought I would be!

What about the nutrition, do you just take vitamins? To me it kind of seems unhealthy? I wouldn't know though because I am not a nutritionist.

How many calories are you eating in your 4 hour window? And what types of food? Are you hungry by the time you reach the eating window?

Just trying to understand how this can be useful.

Are you drinking water throughout the day?

Angie,
I usually eat 1300-1500 cals, with a couple of 2000 days a week. Most people find after a time on IF they settle into an optimal calorie amount for satiation and weight loss. I am still counting/tracking for now until I feel I can do this naturally.

Since I'm doing low carb IF, my menus are like this:

Chicken stir fry with peppers
Broccoli and zucchini quiche
Couple of squares of dark chocolate OR sugar free chocolate cake made with almond flour.

I change up the protein and sides. However, IF does not have to be low carb, you can use the timing pattern with other food content.

Benefits (aside from appetite suppression and weight loss) include:
- reducing blood sugar
- improving insulin sensitivity
- reducing blood pressure
- increasing HDL levels
- getting rid of diabetes
- living a lot longer
- enhancing cognitive function
- higher energy levels

Ara I do take vitamins. I see them more as an insurance policy - I think it's way better to get nutrients from foods. But I do eat vegetables like broccoli, zucchini, spinach, lettuce, cucumber, peppers, radishes, cabbage, eggplant, brussel sprouts, occasional onions and parsnips.

I lost another 1.6 lbs today!

Sounds interesting.
But that's a loooooooooooooong time without eating.

Do you eat continuously during the eating window?

Cardio King,

All I can say is that it doesn't feel as long as it looks!

It depends on the length of my eating window. If it is one hour, then yes, pretty much. If it is a two hour or longer, I will have a mini-meal (protein shake or something) and then a real dinner a bit later.

During fasting, I drink water, black tea, black coffee and herbal teas. Some people find tea and coffee makes their stomach grumble...I haven't had any issues with that.

That sounds tough, but shows a lot of willpower!

I'm assuming you sleep during some of those fasting hours, or are they all while you're awake?

Yes, that's what makes it easier. You count your sleeping hours as part of the fast. So yesterday I finished dinner at 6:30pm, and today I broke my fast at 2pm. 19.5 hours, but I was sleeping for seven!

Honestly, I do this because I don't have great willpower. If I can eat, I just munch on things all day, eating out of boredom or emotional eating. This makes it all so so simple: you can either eat (because it's your eating window) or you can't eat anything (you're fasting). Makes it much easier to avoid justifying various snacks etc.

Maybe, but you have to give yourself credit for NOT eating during your fasting period. Not everyone could do it! That take tremendous willpower to tell yourself that you're not allowed to eat and stick with it.

TRUST ME, if everyone had that kind of power over their eating habits, places like traineo wouldn't exist!

Kudos to you Kate. You're a trooper

Hi Kate. I'm a newbie here, as well.

You said you are relosing the 32 lbs you regained since September. I have three questions:

1) Did you use IF to lose the weight originally?
2) Is this method of eating something you'll be able to maintain for the rest of your life?
3) 10 pounds a month seems like pretty quick weight gain to me (I'm obese, so gain weight easily, but not THIS fast!). Have you had a physical to make sure there isn't a physiological reason for the weight gain?

Fasting is a part of my eating regimen as well (one day a week, right now), and I agree, once you get used to it, not only is it easy, it can be very enjoyable and freeing. Plus, when it's time to eat, the food just seems so much more satisfactory!!

Congrats on the weight loss. I hope it is the beginning of a permanent and positive change in your life.

Sarah

Hi Sarah!

1) Nope. I used a variety of low carb approaches, which I am still following, but now in combination with IF.

2) Yes, I believe so, otherwise I wouldn't do it. Also, you don't have to stick to intermittent fasting every single day - you can do it intermittently, so to speak!

3) I know - I gain weight crazy fast. Part of this was because I was on low carb for so long (three years) and then ate carbs while on my honeymoon in August and on and off for September/October. I still truly think low carb is the best diet for me, but it's one reason I gained it back so quickly. I also went from exercising 3-4times per week to being almost completely sedentary...school just took over. Combine carbs after no carbs, exercise dropping to zero, high stress and poor food choices, and 30lbs over four months isn't so crazy.

I hear you on the freeing aspect of fasting...more time, more emotional freedom from food choices. And yep, the food tastes amazing when you do eat!

Thank you for your supportive words and thought provoking questions!

Kate

Hello! I know this is an older thread but I just discovered intermittent fasting and was wondering how you're doing with it. I lost 50 pounds with JUDDD and gained 20 back before starting again. I have over 100 pounds to lose and I've just started intermitten fasting. I'm learning lots about it and it's really interesting.
