Hey everyone!
I'm new to the whole traineo community, and I'm very excited to have joined! So I figured I'd introduce myself to the group and see what recommendations and input I can get from everyone (seeing how thats what I'm looking for in the first place) haha. We'll I'm a freshman in college and I recently have noticed that I've really fallen out of my normal habits. I used to run track and eat in moderation, but now that college has come, I have a lot of newfound freedoms!
So I never thought much about the amount of time I spent in the dining halls, or how many slices of pizza I had, or how little I excersized, and now I'm reaping the consequences... haha. I've developed quite the jelly belly, which now makes most of my older jeans harder or impossible to button! at first I assumed I had done my laundry wrong and made them shrink (least I hoped I did lol) but in the end I truly realise it could be because of my newly plumper waistline.
I used to sit at a comfortable 164 ish weight, but now I'm residing at a higher 182 n climbing. Did anyone, is anyone currently, going through the same troubles? I'm open to all forms of recommendation, motivation, and critisism! All input is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks a lot n wish me luck in my entry to the battle of the college bulge! -Dan

Hi! I'm a 44 year-old slightly overweight male looking to loose 30lbs by the end of year. For me, weight loss is just one part of an overall plan for living a healthier lifestyle (as healthy a lifestyle as possible!) In addition to diet and exercise, other elements of my healthy way of life include good sleep, proper hydration, kicking the (smoking) habit, meditation, and disease management (I have rheumatoid arthritis).
I signed up at Traineo because maintaining routines has always been difficult for me. 3 years ago however, after many tries, I was finally able to maintain an exercise routine for a period of 6 months with outstanding results. I then stopped working out so I'd have more time for other things and 3 months later the RA got worse. Since then I've been unable to motivate myself back into the gym.
Well, my motivation is back, due in part to Traineo. I think having a few motivators will be a great help. Also, posting my efforts on the Internet, for the whole world to see, may help to keep me on my toes. I'm not entirely sure about that yet so I may change my profile so only Traineo members can see it.
I'm strong willed, but most of all I crave the results I achieved 3 years ago. So I'm determined, and thus far my spirits remain high. I sure am glad you stopped to read about me and great luck with your own efforts! Cheers!

Dan, welcome, to Traineo and adulthood. Adulthood meaning you now get to accept responsibility for your actions. It sounds like you're consuming much more junk food than you did at home. Try getting into good eating habits. Your young so a slice of pie a day isn't going to kill you, but establish a base of healthy foods and veiw the pizza as a treat, not a meal.
Cheers!

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

And take advantage of a college campus... There are great facilities there and the opportunity to walk a lot is good. Getting into a regular workout routine now will only help you in the long run.

Yeah, I'll need to do a little more planning when it comes to my routine now, because without planning, I just end up grabbing that extra dessert or two. Everyone else seems to be doing it though, so I always wonder, why not me? Maybe I can find someone whos having the same problems here as me, because I doubt with all these tempting options, that I'm the only one with the added weight. Any recommendations on how to truly get motivated though, or what my core problems may be?

Looking to add some muscle over the next few months. Trying to get in those calories and focusing on the compound lifts. We'll see how it all goes :)

I've been there Dan, and had many friends who put on more that the Freshman 10-20...
Our biggest thing was eating late and eating unhealthy. Though I ran track and stayed active, eating after 10pm and having greasy things didn't help at all.
Like Dave said, walk around campus if you can vs driving. I had friends who drove 1 minute vs walking from their dorms/appt room to class. Go out and use the Gym most colleges have.
In the Cafeteria (if you use it) try to eat smarter and healthier. Most have an optional healthy dish that you may have to request or even get on the list if everything else is loaded with fat/oils. I requested Baked chicken and ended up starting a trend and soon had about 30 other people who got it with me most nights vs the other nasty food.
Let us know how things go and remember the small things you do can achieve great things in time!

yeah, I've been hearing from others around campus that I'm not the only one, but the whole situation in general sure snuck up on me! At one time I was able to slip on a pair of jeans and run out the door, and now its become more of a 5 minute struggle! haha, either way though ive realised I have a few more options in order to be healthy, but the biggest thing is resisting temptation, which is my truest weak point, and a chore in itself! lol

Hey Dan, I just graduated so I know what you are going through. I bet that you live on campus right now, which is probably why you are stuck with the dorm food. There's no way around it really, dorm food sucks, and there aren't a whole lot of alternatives when you live in a dorm.
As for while you're still in the dorm, you're probably stuck with dorm food, but just try to be more aware of what you're eating, and how much. Also, alchohol is probably a big contributor to gaining weight, so try to moderate a little bit (I know it's hard, I had plenty of trouble w/ that in college).
The most significant thing you can do is start going to the gym. I know when you first start going you might be a little intimidated; there are a lot of muscle heads who think they're bad-ass. Once you get into a routine of going to the gym, you'll be a lot more comfortable and start recognizing people, and it won't be intimidating at all.
good luck!

Hey I just lost about 50lbs. after my freshman year...
You just really have to avoid snacking, and what you eat in the dining halls.
Also late night eating IS KILLER. Drink ALOT of water, and don't eat late at night, and don't snack while you do HW... chew gum or eat vegetables instead.
Pizza, snacking, soda, drinking = bad. It adds up quick..

Also, instead of going out every week I'll limit myself to once or twice a month... I know that sounds crazy.. but alcohol really will killlllll a diet its not worth it.
Instead I'll go walking, or get my HW done.. and then I'm not so stressed out!

TKM grats on the weight loss!
Having never been a big drinker, I can attest only to my friends who did drink alot and their weight issues... a 12pack of beer isn't easy on the Gut, no matter how active you are, especially if its an every night thing...
It's almost as bad as one friend of mine who enjoyes 2 cups of blue-bell icecream 4 nights a week... he quickly put on weight adding 600+ calories every night before bed.
