I'm in 9th grade. I'm trying to lose weight. i want to try and eventually get down to 106. my short term goal is 110. Sports: I do TaeKwonDo and i am currently a high blue belt.
This year in gym we have it everyday except for one marking period where we don't have it at all. I'm hoping that will help me stay in better shape :)
Some irrelevant stuff about me: --I LOVE Music= Simple Plan. Gwen Stefani. Panic at the disco. Fall Out Boy. Carrie Underwood. Kelly Clarkson. Daughtry. many more. --i go to sleepaway camp. [where i lose weight w/o really trying and no its not a weight loss camp-its a Jewish one where all the food is kosher {ew}]--- i lost 8.5 lbs at camp this summer. yay! now lets see if i can actually keep it off. [update: i gained it all back :(]
Goals: [-Stop buying snacks during study hall and lunch (both in cafeteria) HOW DO I DO THIS?] DONE! I only didnt buy something for one day, and then i wasn\'t tempted anymore.--grr. i bought something once, and now i\'m back w this problem. will conquer it tomorrow.-- was not tempted, but i got something as part of my lunch. i\'m taking the money out of my supply case now. [update: high school came, and this problem started again. if i go to the media center everyday, i wont have a problem.] -Exercise more - Go to sleep at a reasonable time (aka not 11 or later-- i have to wake up at 6:20 most days)
Any advice on anything?

According to most sources, more muscle mass will help boost metabolism, as well regular cardiovascular exercise. But at such a young age, I have no idea how to suggest you safely pursue either, as all my knowlege is based on adults. As in my previous reply to your other question, I'd suggest talking to your doctor. Or, at least a sports coach or Phys. Ed./Health teacher at your school.

Hi, Adara
Wow I am so concerned!! Why are you so worried about weight loss at such a very young age. You are still growing and please don't, by any means, cut back on anything in your diet. I am a registered nurse and I am pretty concerned that such a young girl is so worried about a few extra pounds. I think all you need to do is increase the amount of exercise you get and decrease the amount of fatty foods. The best way to increase metabolism though is by eating small meals more frequently and increasing exercise level. Keep in mind that the minute you decide to skip a meal or starve yourself, your body recognizes that as starvation mode and will begin to store all nutrients as fat once you start eating again. Skippiing meals or drastically cutting back on calories is a big metabolism crasher...just some advice!!

Adara... you're going to have to focus your main energy on eating right. That's the most important component, along with some exercise.
Don't skip meals or starve yourself. This WILL slow down your metabolism. Just eat enough of the right kinds of food. It'll take some learning and trial and error, but it'll be worth it.
Find good habits that you can live with (lots of fruit, whole wheat everything, lots of lean protein). Cut out the bad habits (absolutely no fast food, pizza on rare occasions, only drink diet soda). At your age, if you keep these habits up for three months or so, you'll see a difference. Find activities that are fun for you (bike riding, roller blading, etc) and enjoy them regularly. Don't exercise to lose weight, exercise to have fun.
Oh and I agree, gym teachers tend to hate everyone. With their job, I guess I don't blame em

Well I had that problem when I hit highschool and I was corrupted by the dreaded cafeteria. I also do not eat red meat, I am what you call a lacto-ovo-polo vegetarian in other words!! You might be falling into the same trap that I always fall into for that very reason...too many carbs possibly??? Have you tried packing a lunch for school?? Oh and if you are going to eat any junk food, honestly pizza would be the best thing b//c it offers all your food groups..this is a word of encouragement i got from a personal trainer once.haha!! It is ok to eat things like that in moderation. A lot of times when people cut out all junk food entirely..they just end up over doing it when they finally eat junk again. Don't crash diet either. All I can say is moderation moderation. Watch portion sizes and try to add more fresh fruits and veggies in your diet. The only other thing I can suggest is eating healthy..adding a multi-vitamin to your diet and exercising!! I know, not what you wanted to hear probably.

One way to increase your metabolism dramatically is to eat small meals throughout the day around 4-6 meals total. Make sure you take your own lunch to school on days when the meals aren't healthy. You might try eating something in between classes like raw eggs, or a sandwhich of some sort. Also be sure to drink a lot of water throughout the day, and start running to boost your metabolism.

I am a rugger/web developer and, as it turns out, weighing 260 as a web developer doesn't gain me as much as it does in the scrum... ;] I'm looking to get down to a solid 210 lbs now. So far, Traineo has helped me to remain accountable to myself and I love it!

As part of my effort to get fit, I thought it would be nice to try to offer my exercise up to a good cause. I've decided to join the Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride in June and will be riding the 50 MILE COURSE!
I would very much appreciate any donations you could make to help me in the fight against cancer. Thank you!

lol, i agree with mikes statement about the raw eggs. raw egg white's themselves aren't hard to put back, but with the yolk, it's hard not to vomit.
one of my best friends is a gym teacher (elementary). i wonder if her students feel like she hates them...=D
i'll have to tease her about that later.
adara, this might not be good advice, so listen at your leisure. the most important thing when you're young is to get all the nutrients you need. i have lots of friends who were chubby or even fat in middle school and high school. they lost their baby fat in college, which is funny, b/c the healthy and skinny people i knew in high school mostly got fat in college. maybe if you put off worrying about your weight till you're a little older, you'll have better success with dieting, and you'll be happier and healthier too!
again, not necessarily good advice, so take it or leave it.
=)
