As I browse through the group listings - I see different background colors. Do they mean anything?

I think it would be helpful to see which I am already a member of, then maybe color coded by # of members? or default sorted by # members most to least?

The different colors are chosen by the group administrator when they set the group up - you have a choice of color schemes. At the moment groups are sorted by newest first, in order to give new groups a period of promotion.
