I went to the my diet section to try and calculate how many calories I have eaten for today, and I went to the link in that section which is the "Check for food calories in the USDA food databse"

I entered which food, and it gives me the nutrition table. How do I calculate the calories though? I thought there would be a row saying "calories" and how many are listed for 100 grams.

Can someone help me out? Thanks

I think the column/row that says "energy" is the calories, but I'm not 100% sure.

the Kcal?

I went to this:

Cheese, monterey, low fat

Energy kcal 313 0 0
Energy kj 1310 0 0

so 313 calories in 100 grams of cheese? :O

That's what I'm thinking, but I'm not sure.

Sounds about right.

'Course some cheeses are better than others for calorie-counts, like certain goat cheeses for eg. But not everyone digs that heady taste.

I heart Minu

I'm glad you put this up because I was confused as hell about the difference between a "cal" and a "kcal." Now I know they're the same!!!

I am 100% positive! What we know nutritionally as a calorie is actually a kilo-calorie, scientifically. I approximate my calories daily, and don't worry about the exact number, because I just use the graph to show that I am eating similarly every day and to point out especially bad/good days.

In order to approximate accurately, check out fitday.com and use their daily food log. They have many foods already in their database and you can add custom ones. I also use this to show me the ratio of what I'm eating to ensure that I am over 40% protein each day. It's an awesome resource and it's free! If you add history of weight, training, etc they also have excellent reports you can run.

I've entered breakfast already (took about a minute b/c I've already added my custom foods) and have the following guide (with a fancy pie chart):

Total: 476
Fat: 14 127 28%
Sat: 4 36 8%
Poly: 2 15 3%
Mono: 3 26 6%
Carbs: 35 111 24%
Fiber: 8 0 0%
Protein: 54 217 48%
Alcohol: 0 0 0%

The numbers are grams/calories(kcal)/% of total daily calories

sounds good I guess I might check that out. Though im not as fussed with counting calories cause it's a pain in the butt. I'll just make sure i'm working out more lol.

Though, what if the nutriution table doesnt have kcal either? On some foods they don't have it listed :S
