I'm a longtime vegetarian with a wild schedule that doesn't leave me much time for myself. I'm always working to make more time for me.

I was just thinking about some of the bad food habits that I've finally broken and wondered what some other folks used to struggle with.
Other than just eating poorly in general, I used to "need" a candy bar (or other sweet treat) everyday after dinner.

i've always wanted to be healthy and in shape, but been too lazy to really do it...until now. something in me finally said: "hey cindy. it's time to get your shit together." so i did. and i feel great.
i am currently on hiatus from my studies at columbia university in new york city. i'm a sociology major and hope to do my thesis and graduate work on the complex relationship between humans and drugs. i hope, ultimately, to split my time between tenured professorship, musicianship, and mothership.

i have replaced my juice and soda habit with a water and club soda habit.
i also used to get almost daily cravings for things like pop tarts, potato chips, and candy.
i've really learned to control my eating impulses in general. i think more about what i eat, when i choose to eat, and whether i'm really hungry or not.

A skinny rail -- that's what I was most of my youth. I felt great and had energy to spare.
But in my mid-20's I started to gradually gain weight. Now I'm around 50 lbs. overweight and have been for 10 years. I'd like to be around to see my grandkids someday. Time for a change!

Oddly enough, I'm finding my bad habits aren't about food. For me it's finding the motivation to exercise.
But that's just me.

2 years ago I discovered I had a serious liver problem from alcahol abuse. I stopped drinking and dropped my weight from 232lbs to 180lbs. 6 months ago I had one drink and another...etc I now weigh 220lbs and my last chance to save my liver. I will be 180lbs again by April this year. Done it before will do it again and will stick with it as I have too! This picture hopefully my last drink this Xmas day - need to do it for my beautiful partner who as you can see does not need any fitness help!!

Am sure you have heard the 21 day rule? Keep doing something for 21 days and it becomes a habit? get up early 21 days on the trot and it just becomes natural to do it. Grab water instead of juice as Cindy says and soon dont even think of the alternative. For me when I get past 21 days of not automatically having a beer (or worse) on way home or when I get in then becomes a habit to exercise instead to fill the time. Ah well 7 days gone and already feeling 100% better.
Happy New Year

My fitness regimen includes stationary cycling, light weight training and lots of walking around NYC. I'm a graduate of WeightWatchers and an enthusiastic advocate of its balanced approach to weight loss. I'm sure that I drink too much coffee and get too little sleep. :)
My goals are to maintain my weight in a healthy BMI/BF % range and forestall the toll of advancing age. :)
I think Traineo's established a great community and appreciate the support and information we share.

Can you refer me to a source that discusses this further?
I used to binge on fatty and sugary foods...sometimes out of loneliness, sometimes because I had missed a meal, sometimes for the pure pleasure of overindulging. Occasionally, this was spurred by alcohol-induced tipsiness.
I've tackled this by becoming clear-headedly concious of my impulses.

A piece of beef jerky makes a good snack. It takes a lot of chewing, is low on carbs and fat.

I'm a 23 year old FFB (former fat boy). I'm a grad student at the Univ. of Phoenix. I was married on June 1st, 2007 by a wonderful supportive woman.
I have always been the fat kid so now I've changed that. I started at 305. I lost 80 pounds and was at 225 after I was sick. From Jan 07 to Apr 07, I put on 25 pounds. I then started to lose weight again, but started doing it the right way. I am now 235 and leaner than I was at 225. I'm going to see how close I can get to a 6 pack, but eventually I'll start trying to put on some muscle. Then lean out again.
Six-Pack would be awesome, I've never had one of those. So we'll see. (my photo is me at 305lbs. when i get a good pic of me now at my current weight, i'll post it)

Soda/Pop - has been discussed in other threads, but I don't crave them anymore, ever.
Binge eating - well i don't know if I would call it binge eating considering it was like every meal, but I keep my portions under control now. And, I don't eat everyone else's leftovers at the end of the meal anymore.

I'm Steve. I am trying to get back into shape, I ran cross country for all 4 years of high school. I am currently a junior in college at RIT. My BMI is right on the border of normal and overweight. I am pretty muscular but I would still like to see that number drop. At 189 lbs I will have a "normal" BMI. I enjoy working out and run/bike daily as well as weight lift. I know they say you shouldn't bulk while dieting but it's been working for me. I started this summer at 220lbs (extra weight from living @ college) and am now down to just about 200lbs.. hope to break into the 190s soon.

Same thing, 30 days instead of 21 though
I've broken the habit of drinking soda, now I grab an unsweetened iced tea. It's almost natural. At first, I thought it tasted bland but after drinking it for 3 months straight it tastes great.

I dont think i have ever binged on that junk food like fizzy drinks, sweets or chocolate. My problem was just binging on whatever i could get my hands on...mounds of pasta, ham & brie sandwhiches and my fav: hot toast with lots of butter with a big glass of ammereto & coke!
My mum said something to me the other day which put all my binging into prospective. She said that you dont eat because your hungry, it is because you have deep emotional problem within you and finding it will stop the binging all together. I have finally found my source of the problem...It was that i thought i would get fat and be happy because nothing mattered any more because my boyfriend still loves me for who i am. I realised this and sooner than i thought, my cravinbgs disappeared. Although when i do get the craving to eat every thing in sight, i take my dogs out or have even gone for a run!!!
I thought this comment may help some people as it honestly stops me from binging or having a munch on all that rubbish stuff whch aint too good for you.

I am 34 years old, married and a father of a 2.5 year old. They are the motivators for me to reach my goal. I started the new journey on 8/21/06 @307 lbs and as of June '08, I have lost around 108 lbs. I have been able to keep 100 lb weight loss since Sept. '07. What keeps me on track is the Traineo community, vision of a healthy and fit future and the mini-goals below. *GOAL 1 = 244 lbs, Date = 2/15/07 Date Met = 2/7/07 *GOAL 2 = 229 lbs, Date = 3/22/07 Date Met = 3/30/07 ________________________ *GOAL 3 = 199 lbs, Date = 6/30/08 Date Met = 6/5/08 *GOAL 4 = 185 lbs, Date = 09/30/08 Date Met = TBD (185 is my "ultimate" goal. Then build muscle.)
Hobbies/Interests: Baseball, White Sox, bowling, WII, Xbox 360, PSP, XM, Opie and Anthony radio show, Ron and Fez radio show, variety of music, working out, running.

For me...cookies and pizza. For some reason, these are always hard to give up. All other bad habits, I have been able to get rid of.

Hi! I am trying to lose my freshman 25. I am trying to lose 30 pounds to get back to my original weight. At the same time, I want to be lean and toned. I enjoy activities like running on the treadmill, doing the elliptical and dancing.

I stopped binging on junk food and cookies lately becuase I got soo sick of them. When I eat them, they taste good at first and then turn bland. I don't taste what I eat. Then I get kinda sick and queasy and it affects my study and everything. Going home for the holidays where these foods don't exist is great.
I agree that beef jerkies are a great alternative if you want to chew something. Also, sugarless is gum is possible. I am not a big fan of gum becuase I grew up without gum...it is banned where I live.

I'm a slappy geek (IT Systems Analyst at work, Gadget lover at play) and ready to do something to change my state of slappiness...time to de-slappify myself.
Unfortunately, my love for all things tech is, by it's nature, a very sedentary lifestyle which has lead me down the path of being slappy (overweight/obese, in case you were curious). After having three different doctors strongly urge me to lose weight and a blood pressure reading of 190/110...this new path became an absolute must.
I've joined the Weight Watcher ranks and found it to be a great gateway to my 'lifestyle change'. It has been a tremendous help to reducing my calories, while helping get in my daily intake of fruits, vegetables, calcium, water, omega-3's, etc...
As for fitness, I have been using my eliptical trainer at home because running outdoors was a little harsh on my knees. This has helped to ease my hand off the TiVo remote and onto the home exercise equipment. I now watch digitally recorded shows while huffing and puffing. =P
I look forward to meeting new and interesting people on here and finding new 'thinspirations' and motivators.

This is a good topic for me personally because it relates well to this morning. Every day at work we have a Food Truck (Roach Coach) that comes in the morning. My old habit was to go out and have at least a couple of tacos. The grease dripping monsters quickly became addicting and a staple in my daily routine.
Well, since I started my new 'lifestyle change', I haven't gone to the truck anymore as I usually have some Eggs Substitute, Salsa, and lite Whole Wheat toast or Oatmeal in the morning instead. Today, I was running late and only had time for a protein shake. Still hungry, I had to go out to the truck for some carbs ... I returned with a banana and a V-8. Habit broken!
I've always been told that it takes 2 weeks to start a habit, but 6 weeks to break one. I don't have any references to back that up, but anecdotally, it has worked for me. I tried googling, but didn't come up with any hard data references.

Must get back down to me fightin' weight, darned stoopid holidays and their tasty treats...
Fer reel: A couple years ago I dropped from 200 to 120, and since I've been "maintaining" ... which has turned into a slight, slow gain. School leaves me with an excuse to not work out, and that has lead to my weight creeping up. After 20 pounds I fought hard to get off the first time I'm saying no more and working my fat bum back down into the 120s where it belongs.
I prefer lifting heavy but I've learned to not hate "cardio" and have even taken up running... sorta.
Of course, my fave pastimes are usually sedentary, my art, gaming, etc... But I can get over that.

There are times when I quite literally would have something (candy) "just because I can." I would kinda want it, (but not crave it because if it was out of sight it was totally out of mind,) and decide that it won't hurt and I can have it. Of course, do it enough and it does... and I did. I guess I'm saying I'm breaking the habit of being a 5-year-old brat? HA
There's a big difference between an occasional indulgence of something you really like and savour and just grabbing a snickers every time you see one and never really even want it. The former is fine, the latter is just a stupid way to add some pounds.
