Okay so I was sick a few weeks ago with Strep but I didn't have a cold or anything and the dr. tested for mono and it came back negative.

my problem is now that when I am at the gym my muscles are really "shaky" when I work out. I am not pushing myself any harder then before but if anything I am taking it easier then before.

For example, when I am spinning and we slow down my legs feel really wobbly. Or today when I worked out my upper body muscles and after I couldn't hold my arms up to hold my cell phone because my arm was shaking so bad.

Any ideas as to why this might be happening? I am thinking possibly not enough water or protein...

I thought it was because I hadn't been in a while, but I went 3 times last week and today and it seems to be getting worse and not better...

I know a lot of people get shaky from low blood sugar, are you eating properly or did you cut back because you were sick?

One person I know had a similar problem and his doctor tested him for diabetes (not sure if the two were related) and it came back positive, whichever type of diabetes doesn't require the insulin shot, but since he's started managing that I don't think it's been a recurring issue for him. I'll ask next time I see him online.

mmm I got really sick once when I wrestled in high school. I was out for two weeks and lost like... 6 pounds. Crazy stuff really. But once I was back in school, I was back on the mat. I had shaky muscles then too. It feels like you go from strength to like... rubber limbs, right?

I couldn't tell you how I got over it. But it does go away. If the strep was really bad and took a lot out of you, your body could still be recovering. If you coughed a lot, it definitely takes energy out of you and stresses your whole body.

Your body just needs to catch up. You can go to the gym still, but maybe don't work as hard as you once could. Drop your workload in the gym by like.. 10-20% and give it another week or so.

I'd say just don't try to improve for a week or so. Just keep going to the gym and do... I dunno, somebody help me. Squishy ball sit-ups and push-ups?

And eat every two-three hours, including a good protein. It helps me sometimes when I'm feeling like I've overdone it.

It sounds like you're depleting your glycogen stores when you're working out. Glycogen is the stored sugar in your muscles. When you're sick your body will catabolize some of your muscle tissue, so perhaps your stores aren't back up to snuff again? I'm just guessing here.

Try drinking a bit of juice before a workout and see if that helps. The sugar in the juice will be readily available for your working muscles to snatch up, and perhaps those glycogen stores won't be as affected. If you try it let me know if it works for you.

Thanks everyone! I am going to give the sugar thing a try and try to increase my protein... we'll see how it works out.... if it's not better in a week I will have to see the doc about this one!
