I'm a rugby player on sabbatical in order to have more time to finish my dissertation, but the down side of this is my lack of motivation to exercise. I've gained about 25 lbs over the past two years.

I'm always really hungry right after a workout but I've read that your body will store any calories you eat right after working out?
When do you eat in terms of before and after a workout?

You should eat pretty quickly after working out. I usually work out after I get off work and then go straight home and eat dinner. Some people actually go so far as to take food with them to the gym so they can get the nutrients replenished ASAP. I don't know where you heard the bit about storing calories from food you eat after working out, but that's not right. I mean maybe if you are eating like icing or something, but get some protein and some carbs in, and your body will thank you.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

After a workout is one of the best times to eat... Especially if you want to have a bit of a cheat meal - your body will burn through it! Every workout with weight training that I do is immediately followed by a protein shake too

Looking to add some muscle over the next few months. Trying to get in those calories and focusing on the compound lifts. We'll see how it all goes :)

Try to eat 6 meals a day if you can.
My breakfast is one of the bigger ones where dinner should be on of your smallest ones.
After working out I have a protein shake for the body to get what it needs. There is alot of debate about what should be consumed after a workout and tons of marketing goes into trying to convince someone theirs is better than the rest. Depending on ones goals and their diet would also affect what they eat after a workout.
Obviously a low carb diet should have a low carb protein shake. One where one is trying to get energy and protein back into their system would be able to be a little less selective on their protein shake they consumed.

I love to eat. Carbs is my weakness link that I always lose control in front of it.
I started running for fitness in 2007. Ever since I finished the 1st marathon (San Diego RnR 2007), I am addicted to running.
I started traineoing in Nov 2007. I have reached my goal weight in Jun 08 already. But, now, I don't care much about my weight. I care about it only if it affects my running performance.

My nutritionist told me to eat within 15min after working out. This is the best time to refill your energy tank and help your muscle growth. She said the post workout meal must have protein and some carbs. She recommend pineapple as the major carbs for post workout meal. She said the enzyme in pineapple helps to digest protein better. Protein can be whey, soy, egg,... My post workout meal is normally pineapple and cottage cheese.
For pre-work out meal, she recommended to eat at least 1 hr ahead. But, I found it hard if I work out in the morning at 6am. It means I have to get up at 4 something to wash up and eat. I normally eat 1/2 cp of oatmeal+applesauce (also recommended by my nutritionist) about 15min before working out. So far, my stomach is Ok with it.

Thanks everyone. My friend who told me this was not interested in gaining muscle so maybe that was why she doesn't eat after working out.

Rugby Player eh! A woman after my own heart. As an ex rugby player myself plus PTI in the armed forces for many years may I suggest that u eat very little if anything at all except drink prior to a workout then drink more directly afterwards, followed by a hearty meal within the hour. If you are a 3/4 or back row forward may i suggest 'spinning' as a brilliant aerobic workout for losing weight and increasing speed. If you are a front five forward and it doesn't look like u r from the photo then heavier weights are also required. If motivation is difficult it is always better to find a friend to hit the road or the gym with. Good luck with the dissertation.

Hi Peter,
That pic is from when I was in shape and from a summer 7's game. I've never played consistently in the front five although I have propped, when I was heavier than this, and played some second row. My position in college was no.8 and I'd play scrum if we were playing 10's or missing our scrum half. Since college I've played on scrap teams and just had to play where needed. About two years ago when I dropped to 140 I got pushed into the back line. I do miss being a forward but my old age doesn't mind relaxing some with the backs

Quoting: jmunster Thanks everyone. My friend who told me this was not interested in gaining muscle so maybe that was why she doesn't eat after working out.
I think of eating a macro-balanced, quality meal apres workouts as a means more to keep muscle, as opposed to gaining it, (as I'm not into heavy lifting), though that is of course always welcome.

I thought u looked a bit fit in your photo at the 7's - well fearsome back row lady best u get yourself 7's fit again for this summer. I really would give 'spinning' a go if u can. I may be wrong but as u r a No8 u will be probably 'and no disrespect intended' be quite a big person which usually means aerobic activities such as vigorous swimming, road running etc is a necessary evil. Give it a go you'll like it - I gave it a try when i was on business in SA and it was great. A real sense of achievement when u finish.
