I've run through a flurry of tests this week (x-ray, MRI) and I most probably have a torn scapholunate ligament in my left wrist.
Most surgical procedures I've found info on are not promising -- they work well for sedentary folk who don't put a lot of stress on their wrist, but the results deteriorate very rapidly for people who do.
Any suggestions? Has anyone had to deal with this type of injury?
I'm meeting an ortho surgeon this Monday, but I'm wondering if I should shop around and find someone with sports injury experience. I really would like to keep lifting weights and don't want to have to deal with someone telling me I can't anymore.
Or maybe I'm just in shock and denial...

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they haev to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.
Impossible is NOTHING.

That's probably the best thing you could do, specifically finding a sports injury professional... I gaurantee there are a lot of athletes, especially in the NFL and stuff, who have had that or worst injuries and other than a severe break, I've never heard of someone retiring early from wrist pain.
Then again, a lot of those guys consider pain killers a food group, so YMMV.

Thanks! I just got an appointment for this Wednesday with the wrist surgeon on staff for the Philly Eagles, Flyers, and Phantoms!
I feel much better, especially after reading about some of the amazing recoveries some of those athletes have had at his hands.
Keeping my fingers crossed.

One Year 19 Lbs lost.
For December 07 to December 08 the job is to lose another 17 lbs.
-- Coming up for nearly a year of Traineo. 22 lbs lost, 13 to go!
What a year! I want to thank Traineo and it's members, and my doctors and friends, and gym, and my walking and running training partner -- my dog -- who all have have been a big part of my recovery from a bad case of pneumonia last August, from high blood pressure in May and June, and support through herniated cervical discs in July August and the present.
Somehow, its been possible to keep the faith and keep going through the neck and arm pain, but even on some of those bad pain days, getting the exercise at the gym, on a C25K run, on a bike ride, or in the surf helps make it bearable.
A year ago -- at least sports-wise, for life is altogether another thing -- I was losing my sense of identity as a surfer and windsurfer, gaining a sense of identity as a cyclist, a runner, 9 months later reentering the surf, losing my ability to ride ... things came and went between hospital visits.
At times, all those things were stripped away -- and just to be able to walk down the block was an accomplishment. There were recoveries and sometimes just advil and bullish efforts.
It's good to be back in the surf and on the bike sometimes, neck/shoulder/arm pain notwithstanding.
My thoughts go out to all those Traineo members out there fighting their own health and spiritual battles...you know we are here in this small way.

Good thing you are seeing a doc. I didn;t when I fractured / broke my wrist, and it was a nagging pain for a decade. Still makes pushups kinda painful, but not so bad now.
If the tendon is fully torn and separated, don't delay in getting it fixed. My friend waited too long ( a few weeks) trying chiropractic on his ruptured achilles and the tendon ends receded away from each other, making the surgery very problematic.

Oh BTW, hopefully the Flyerz will take the Penguins down. (Yes, I'm a grumpy Rangers fan with a few sour Penguin grapes to squash.) So er, don;t distract that Doctor from his job of fixing up the Flyers. .. :0

Well, I'm in the same boat as you Phil -- it was a 12-year old broken wrist from an inline skating accident.
It was a little disconcerting that two doctors argued over my diagnosis. The senior doctor said that there was ligament damage, but he thought the source of my pain was tendonitis after all. I got a corticosteroid shot and another appointment two weeks from now.
I asked about weight lifting and was told to stay off anything that involves gripping, which means I can do some Cybex\Nautilus type machines in lieu of my free weights. I think I'll stick to running for a while.
We'll see again in two weeks!

That sucks to know that has been chipping away for 12 years.
I have another x-ray on my ankle next week as the docs are starting to doubt their initial diagnosis and there are fears that I broke something in there and it has healed funny.
I guess when you first get it x-rayed they miss a lot because of the swelling.
