hm, this may not be the full story, but i can't look everything up right now.

nixon had a vice president, spiro agnew, who resigned i believe. at the time, the us government had no way of dealing with that, so nixon appointed a vice president, gerald ford, who was approved by the electoral college, not by us vote.

then nixon got into a bit of a stir and resigned himself to avoid impeachment. he was replaced by ford.
