I looked it up - AFTER I made my guess by the way - cos I wanted to know... here is the answer...

The shortest known gestation period is 12 to 13 days. This record is shared by three marsupials (mammals in which the young are born prematurely and finish developing in a pouch located near the mother's abdomen): the American or Virginian opossum (Didelphis marsupialis); the rare water opossum, or yapok (Chironectes minimus), of central and northern South America; and the eastern native cat (Dasyurus viverrinus) of Australia.

So can I ask a question seen as Dave has disappeared temporarily?

What is the smallest mammal on Earth?

Nope.

Since this question has been out there for nearly 24 hours with no correct answers I'm going to give multiple choice.

A. 12 fingers and 12 toes
B. 12 fingers and 13 toes
C. 13 fingers and 12 toes
D. 13 fingers and 14 toes

Okay so I guess no one is paying attention so I'll go ahead and give the answer.

It's B. 12 fingers and 13 toes for a total of 25.

There are two holders for this record:

Pranamya Menaria (India; born August 10, 2005) has 25 in total (12 fingers and 13 toes). This is as a result of the condition Polydactyly and Syndactyly.

Devendra Harne, pictured above, (India; born January 9, 1995) also has 25 in total (12 fingers and 13 toes) as a result of the condition polydactylism.
