I needed to get some pants for a conference I am going to this week. Due to the fact that I had lost a total of 10 inches I thought I would have at least gone down a size, or at least have my current size a little loose on me. Nope, I am still the same size and they are still as snug when I put them on. No weight loss and no size change... it really sucks

I'm not sure I understand. You've lost 10 inches but there is no size change? Just in clothes, you mean?

Clothes really aren't the best rubric, anyway. Do you REALLY want to go out and get new clothes every time you meet a goal?

Oh, and I don't know how this is for women's clothes, but every time I put on a pair of jeans, it is tightest just after being washed, and it loosens up over the next day or so. I don't trust clothes to measure size accurately. They're too elastic!

Just be happy that you are losing inches. The weight will come off soon, too (if you have the right program and diet set up).

I am thinking about going to a nutritionist...

Women's sizes are just a mystery to me still, and I don't think I'll ever really crack the code to understand why it goes by some arbitrary scale rather than just waist size, neck size or whatever... the way men's cloth sensibly does!

If you're losing weight (and inches, obviously!) and feeling better, don't concern yourself with the arbitrary numbering of some size scale. What matters in the end is how you feel and, looking at the pictures you posted recently, you're looking fantastic.

Don't get discouraged, you're doing really good; I'm not going to say don't let yourself feel these emotions when they come up... sometimes going downstream means feeling what you need to feel, but use it to build momentum for your future progress, because once this train gets a rollin', it don't stop for no one!

Weird thing with me - in the beginning when I was expecting to go down in size all the time I never did. The 10 inch losses didn't mean much for me either, but (and don't ask why) the day or two AFTER I got all depressed about not going down I always managed to get into the skinner stuff.

Oh, I should also mention, I went down slower in the beginning because I wasn't accepting my pounds too well, and probably wearing clothes that were too tight for me to begin with

And... I've been losing weight slower these last few weeks, and somehow I've still gone down in my jeans, but my shirt size isn't following so quickly... maybe it's a top/bottom question for you too?

What's odd is that, for me, I barely even noticed my size drops. I just realized today that I'm already on the 3rd notch in on a new belt I got once my old belt was waaaaaaaaaay too loose, and I had intentionally bought a belt that barely worked so that I could measure against it. When I made a comment about it to a friend, she said "Wow! Doesn't that just feel AMAZING?" and I said "meh."

I literally said "meh." That was my gut, instinctual response heh.

I'll second the mentioning of inaccurate sizing in the women's clothing industry. From style to style and brand to brand there's no accounting for accounting, so to speak and when sales go down, often so do sizings.

Stina, if you have z' cash for a reputable nutritionist, then go for it. If you have z' cash for a nutritionist/trainer combo, then go for the whole enchilada.

But in the mean time, if you really want to crack this nut then consider posting everything you eat and drink and when here on traineo, (as noted, the dailyplate.com is a great tool for tracking that).

Also post not only your workouts, but your heart rates therein. Post any meds you may be on as well, along with daily water intake so we can give give you more help.

The answer is waiting.

Hang in there Stina!

You may be like me... I lose inches, but not where I want MOST to lose them first! I first notice size changes on my heart rate monitor watch. Yeah, my flippin' wrist measurement!

Where what I WANT to change size is my hips/butt/stomach. I've lost 40 pounds in a year and a half... and guess what?

I STILL WEAR THE SAME EXACT SIZE STRETCH JEANS! They are more comfortable, though they still feel tight right out of the wash, then stretch as I wear them to a comfortable place.

I also still wear the same size 2X swimsuit.

Yet... I have steadily been tightening my heart rate monitor strap right under my boobs. Had to do it again today. So I know inches are being lost, but they just are peeling off in tiny layers, like a roll of paper towel. A paper towel layer gone is noticeable at the wrist level... but not very at hip level! And I may well be losing slightly more from my upper body than lower.

At the same time, I am fitting into T-shirts that once were too tight!

It's common for women to have more trouble losing from the lower body area... just keep on keepin' on and eventually you will go down a size.

Don't rely too much on clothing. I agree that jeans are smaller after being washed and loosen up after wearing them. Just keep doing what you are doing and I am sure you will drop the sizes eventually!

That makes two of us!!

I also think that after you've stretched a favorite pair of jeans out, they are now the next size bigger! I also went shopping for some work clothes the other day, and was disappointed to discover the best fitting ones were still 14s. GRRRRR!!!!! The 14s I have at home are falling off of me in a matter of minutes straight out of the dryer!

To answer some people's questions about women's sizes, in the 50s and earlier the sizes were much more standardized than they are now. Now, as we all know, a size 10 in one brand can be totally different than a size 10 in another brand. Vanity sizes came into play - if a woman has a choice between two dresses - one is an "8" and the other a "6", which one are you going to pick? As a result, sizes have shrank un-uniformly over the years.

Marilyn Monroe's dress size 12 or 14, but in today's standards it's generally a considered a size 8.

Hey guys,

I'm at a conference in Indiana for work for a few days thats why I haven't responded. Thanks for the words of encouragement and sharing your stories with me, I am still in a little rut, it doesnt help that it seems every woman at this conference is thin.... then there's me, ARGH!!

I have been thinking over my current diet and I think haven't been completely... honest with myself in my calorie intake. (Like say, I can have Taco Bell for lunch and since that taco had 1100 cals so dinner/snack can only be 900 cals...) I am thinking my diet is where I need help. The exercise, I'm fine with.

I feel you. Exercise is awesome. The diet is not always very awesome.

And I also feel you on being surrounded by thin people. Most of my friends are very thing so I feel like a hippo around them sometimes.

Don't get discouraged!! You can do it!!

it's hard not to let the numbers and notches rule you. i'm sure you're feeling a change, and if there's change in inches lost, stay with monitoring that instead.
in terms of diet and exercise, i've noticed that i can't do one without the other and expect a change. it's one of those "duh!" moments that you have to go through yourself to realize. for example... i haven't been doing as much exercise and i've kind of leveled off with my weight.
i think you're doing awesome if you're seeing changes. just keep going and listen to your body!

I know the feeling! It *may* help you to try this.

I have a very strict / set diet during the week (partly for convenience, since I take my lunch with me every day, and it's easier to make the same stuff while I'm still half-awake, partly to facilitate calorie tracking).

So I made an Excel spreadsheet, listing (in columns):

Item name (1 serving)
Total calories
Calories from fat
Protein (g)
Calories from protein (prev column x 4)
Carbohydrates (g)
Calories from carbs (prev column x 4)

I have listings for each type of food I might consume on a given day: bagels, apples, bananas, oranges, tuna, mayo, honey, oatmeal, EVERYTHING.

And as I eat it, I copy the appropriate line into the list and keep a running total of my calories and fat/protein/carb breakdown. I work on the computer, so I can do this easily. At the end of the day, I can see how much I've eaten and whether I'm really eating 2000 calories or if I just think I am.

This is VERY useful for me... It may help you, too. Good luck!
