Like many of you, I work in an office…well…more of cube really. I enjoy what I do and have the benefit of working with some great people. That being said - I work 8:30 â€" 5:00 plus 2 hours in a car a day. So I’m looking at about 10.5 hours of sitting at a desk inches away from a computer praying that carpel tunnel doesn’t come knocking on my door. I work out between 4 and 5 days a week, have a good diet etc… The problem is that on a slow day I just think of how sedentary I am. I try to go outside when I can to get some air walk around, stretch, and on occasion toss around football with my boss, but that doesn’t always workout. Its not that I would be spending that 10 + hours at the gym everyday if I wasn’t working, but I would definitely not be inactive for such an extended period of time. So I guess my question is what do you do to stay afloat on a long slow day at work? I guess I’m just looking for reassurance that the hard work I put into the gym isn’t being negated by the computer marathon I run everyday. I’m really not trying to be a downer guys, but today is realllllly slow.

I think there's something in the air today, b/c everyone (online) has been mentioning how slow it feels. I haven't worked in an office environment since June of last yr, but I'll tell ya what I used to do & give ya some advice.

1. We had scheduled breaks, so I'd always go for a walk on my break. When I had like-minded friends, we used to do sprints in the (infrequently used) stairwells ;)
2. Fidgeting...lots of it! I'm probably the worst knee-bobber, toe-tapper, finger-drummer out there...I fidget constantly, which I figure burns an extra hundred calories a day (if not more).
3. Never use an elevator if you don't NEED one, and always take the longest route anywhere. I would always park at the faaaaaaaaaaar end of our parking lot to maximize my walk into the building. And luckily, our building only had 3 floors, so I never had to take the elevator unless I was hauling tons of paperwork somewhere.
4. Be more social. If your job allows it, get up and go talk to someone instead of emailing them. Company email makes things convenient, but sometimes it's good to talk it thru, too.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Don't worry about sitting on your duff all day. So long as you are getting your exercise in, you'll be fine. (Try to) have a great day!

I do body weight squats and push ups and jumping jacks in my office (with the door closed ) And lots of stretching, especially my hamstrings which get really tight from sitting all day.
