Being insulin resistant, I have had weight issues since childhood. About 3 years ago I was at my heaviest weight at 90kg. Over time with diet and exercise, I brought the weight down to 66kg. Over the past year the weight has slowly crept up to around 73kg. The main reason is that I cheat on my diet. My workout routine: about an hour of step aerobics done to home videos 5 days a week, resistance training at the gym for about an hour each, 4 days a week and and 1 hour of yoga once a week.

I work part-time and have this habit of taking a nap of 45minutes to an hour in the afternoons. I absolutely love this nap.The quality of sleep I get is fantastic and I wake up refreshed and rejuvenated.
I also get around 7 hrs of sound sleep at night but rarely have the ' raring to go' feeling in the morning that my nap gives me.
I was wondering if this napping habit is bad? Does taking a nap contribute to weight gain?
Any other traineo member who loves their nap time?

My fitness regimen includes stationary cycling, light weight training and lots of walking around NYC. I'm a graduate of WeightWatchers and an enthusiastic advocate of its balanced approach to weight loss. I'm sure that I drink too much coffee and get too little sleep. :)
My goals are to maintain my weight in a healthy BMI/BF % range and forestall the toll of advancing age. :)
I think Traineo's established a great community and appreciate the support and information we share.

Great topic, Renuka! Because I'm perpetually sleep-deprived, I tend to doze on the subway ride to and from work.
More seriously, I love taking about a half hour nap on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, followed by a Vente Iced Americano from Starbucks. This break really energizes me.
Lifehacker recently posted this Ode to the Afternoon Nap. You'll find other nap-related postings on that site by using "nap" as a search term.
Happy dozing!

I'm a writer and a web developer. Neither is a very active occupation, so I'm trying now to make up for a lifetime of sedentary activity and overeating. I'm not tracking calories since I'm following the Weight Watchers Core Program, where calories are not tracked.

I too love my naps! And I think that if you find them refreshing and helpful, don't give up on them. As long as they're not interfering with your life or your relationships, then I don't think they're a problem.

I'm a college student and obviously a frequent napper! I am a psychology major and we have learned how GREAT napping is for you! I think that if you are waking up from your naps refreshed then that is awesome. In my classes they actually suggest that people take naps during the day! And sleep does not contribute to weight gain, it actually contributes to weight LOSS! So nap on!!!

I had heard that napping is horrible for your metabolism (long term effects are bad). Anyone know if that is true?
I can never take short naps - mine are always 2 hours!

The metabolic rate during sleep is only 15 percent less than if you are just sitting around not doing anything. So that might be why you think it is "bad" for your metabolism. I know that there have also been studies showing that people who sleep more weigh less. Think about it though. If your asleep you aren't eating and if you take a nap and get rested you are more likely to feel motivated to go workout! Or at least I know that I am. Sleep also allows your brain to sort things out and organize thoughts. So during the waking hours you can process thoughts better and be "sharper"! You are also less likely to be cranky and stressed out....which if you're like me, stress causes you to eat more and less healthy!

I am a contractor for a monolithic IT firm. This translates into a lot of time spent sitting. I have always been a big guy, but I am tired of being obese so I am going to utilize the power of community to hold my feet to the fire to stay active.

Quoting: Renu I work part-time
I wish I worked part time ... but knowing me that would mean only putting 40 hours in!
I love naps as well. I have a lot of trouble sleeping more than 6 hours at time so naps are often near impossible to accomplish. Normally I just lay in bed/couch and relax.

I posted this becoz someone told me when I was mentioning my struggle with weight loss that afternoon naps make people fat.
I am now convinced by most of the above posts that this napping habit is not bad.
I am really active in my waking hours so my naps will be guilt free from now on!

I'm a 23 year old FFB (former fat boy). I'm a grad student at the Univ. of Phoenix. I was married on June 1st, 2007 by a wonderful supportive woman.
I have always been the fat kid so now I've changed that. I started at 305. I lost 80 pounds and was at 225 after I was sick. From Jan 07 to Apr 07, I put on 25 pounds. I then started to lose weight again, but started doing it the right way. I am now 235 and leaner than I was at 225. I'm going to see how close I can get to a 6 pack, but eventually I'll start trying to put on some muscle. Then lean out again.
Six-Pack would be awesome, I've never had one of those. So we'll see. (my photo is me at 305lbs. when i get a good pic of me now at my current weight, i'll post it)

Not bad for you...If you feel better after a nap there is nothing wrong with napping. If it allows your body to operate more efficiently, go for it.
Secondly, Our bodies are smart, if your body is telling you to sleep, you may just very well need it...so take a nap.

You can bet that if I am not actually at the gym I certainly am thinking about it.

Napping is wonderful.. my Devon Rex (cat) sleeps on my pillow and I have to say that this is the strangest looking creature I or anyone else has ever seen.
I used to have a parrot that climbed up the duvet and would sleep under my arm.. oh gosh I am rambling!!
To much sleep affects your circadian rhythm..hmm wonder if I spelled that right?

I teach Prealgebra to 7th graders ... yeah they see the need to learn this stuff.
I am also married with three teenagers who have no illusions about the future and know that they have to work their butts off to get into the colleges of their choice. But mom is still just another extension of their lives. I'm running a little thin right now. Just not my weight.
My husband travels, but when he's home we like to ride motorcycles. Yeah!

Sleep is sooo good for us. That is when our bodies replenish serotonin which is necessary mental health. Which makes sense, since if we feel good about our selves, we are more likely to take care of ourselves. Nap on.

A skinny rail -- that's what I was most of my youth. I felt great and had energy to spare.
But in my mid-20's I started to gradually gain weight. Now I'm around 50 lbs. overweight and have been for 10 years. I'd like to be around to see my grandkids someday. Time for a change!

Two things about this...
1. My great grandma was having some health trouble in her 70s that no one could diagnose. Finally an "old country doctor" told her, "Just take a cat nap in the afternoon every day."
She lived to be 110. True story.
2. If you are serious about taking "power naps" I suggest you check out Pzizz napping software (http://www.pzizz.com). Seriously. Napping software. There's nothing weird or occulty going on. It's software that allows you to set the desired length of your nap and plays soothing sounds with helpful tips on how to relax more. I think the secret to it is it doesn't allow you to nap/sleep too deeply so you don't "crash". The results is awaking more refreshed.
I use it and it's made a big difference with my stress levels, energy through the day and even sleeping at night. It's worth it.

I have worked since I was 14 years old and always kept busy. Now I've decided to be a stay at home daddy with my son Noah, which has been the best year OF MY LIFE. However, this has lead me to a tad lazy, to eat more, and the worst habit of laying on the coach and watching TV. To battle this I have joined a gym and kept myself as busy as my son allows. This means taking him to the Indy Zoo when it's warm, going to the Children's Museum, going to the park, walking the mall, etc. I want to be very old to see my boy grow, and to teach him what exercise has taught me: 1. Always push yourself 2. Never give up 3. Everyday you go to the gym you just bettered yourself 4. Trust in God, he will show you the way.

I think "Power Naps" are the best. I have been known to run out to my car during lunch and take a 20 minute nap and felt great afterwards.
For people that have a hard time getting to sleep or can't wake up on their own try PZIZZ, it's really cool.
http://www.pzizz.com/
I use it on my pocket pc, but you can burn a cd so you can listen to it in the car.
