I am a 33 year old mother of a six year old boy. He's my life. Recently joined the local YMCA and started working out. I really enjoy it. I have been wanting to try to loose weight for a while but can't get motivated. Now I'm really ready!

I have been having trouble with my sciatic nerve. Sometimes it hurts so bad. Especially on the treadmill and eliptical.
So do any of you have the same problem and if so what have you done to releive the pain besides taking pain meds? Are there any stretching things I could do to releive the pain?
Thanks!

ALSO,
Alot of people (including my trainer) said to just keep working it and the pain will eventually go away.

Has this been properly diagnosed as a sciatica complaint?? Or was it self diagnosed or told to you by someone you know??
If it actually is, I'm not sure your trainer should be so flippant about training through it. If you have trapped a nerve then the only way for the pain to leave is for the nerve to finally numb the sensation and stop giving feedback telling you that it is trapped. I'm certainly no expert in nerve damage but I would probably research a second opinion and be sure.

I've always been bigger. Maybe not classified as being fat because I carry it pretty well. But, well, I'm fat. There's no fooling myself. In January, months of hard work paid off as my wife got pregnant with what will be our first child. I had been exercising a bit until that point, but I decided to ramp it up a notch and get my weight to where I can be healthy and be around a long time for my wife and kid.
I've been known to drop 40-50 pounds in 5 months or so on a few occasions, only to slowly gain that weight back over a couple years. This time is different. I know everybody says that and usually that statement doesn't come to fruit, but I've got that incentive...becoming a daddy.
Got a blog rolling- rokandroll.blogspot.com
I post on it a few times a week. Mostly fitness stuff. I try to be somewhat humorous. Check it out if you're REALLY bored.

I had it for a few months three years ago. I'd be walking and I'd get a crippling jolt up and down my leg and hip. It went away-I don't know why-and haven't seen it since.

I had terrible sciatica about two years back, it kept me from rowing for about 9 months but it did go away, but only because I tended to abstain from activities that aggravated it.
I found alleviation from pain in Ibuprofen, Naproxen, and exercises that stretched out my lower back, like stiff legged deadlifts.
I second Dean in getting a professional diagnosis, because if it is legitimate sciatica, continuing exercise that exacerbates the problem is obviously not good recourse.

Okay so I didn't get a professional diagnosis this time but when I was pregnant with my son I had sciatica and it was the same pain so I diagnosed myself.
UPDATE: Since I have started doing water arobics and working more on the eliptical I have NO MORE SCIATIC NERVE PAIN!!!!
I'm completely amazed.
My trainer has suggested Yoga. I may try it out.
Thanks ya'll

I have compressed discs in my lower back that often produce sciatic-like symptoms--though since losing weight the pain is thankfully no longer crippling--more of a discomfort for the most part and only sporadic in nature, though once in a while, it's the ice sack and creep-mode again.
Happy to say that I can work out with usually no problems, it's really only aggravated by doing things like aggressive vacuuming or tons of floor mopping--stuff that is usually done at a 45 degree angle.
Glad yours is mending, Kim, ENJOY the freedom.
