I bought a garbage disposal, and I need to drill a hole in our stainless steel sink for the on/off switch (it's an air actuated type, and it's much easier to wire than a wall switch). I didn't realize WHAT A PAIN this was going to be. Apparently regular drill bits are no match for stainless steel.

I just came back from Lowe's with a freakin' $20 drill bit to cut through this stuff, and I'm still working up a sweat - I'm bent over the sink and pushing down as hard as I can to get this hole going, and there's little more than a dent for about 5 minutes of work. My poor abs!! I had to check Traineo to take a break, LOL.

Anyway... home improvement - whew, what a workout!

Are you using a bit for metal?

Yes, cobalt 135 degree split tip, for stainless steel, with cutting oil

I finally got the hole drilled. It only took 20 minutes!

Good bit choice. Mission accomplished.
Make sure to put in your traineo training log- 20 minutes of hole drilling, "real hard" level

Well I am quite embarrassed! Turns out the hole I punched out is too big. (I drilled that horribly difficult pilot hole, then used a knock-out die to make a nice hole with no burs). I'm going to blame that on the knock-out being labeled incorrectly, but actually I should have double checked the measurement before I did anything. Oh well, live and learn!

I can't realistically patch this hole and make it work. It's 1/2" too big in diameter! So, I stopped by Lowe's on the way to work this morning and bought another sink. hahahaha Oh, I feel so stupid.

I get to do this all over again tonight.

Yeah, hubby is out of town this week. Hey, give me some credit. I got EVERYTHING right, except for the hole size!! Plumbed up with no leaks, all the wiring done... just this stupid hole, ha!!

I haven't told hubby about it yet. I suppose he'll figure it out once he gets home and sees a big hole in the sink with nothing in it. Maybe I'll make him drill the hole on the new sink!

Yeah, unless something is terribly heavy and requires brute strength, I'd prefer to do it myself. There is nothing terribly difficult about most "manly" chores, plus I usually do a better job than what I could expect out of someone I hired to do it.

Gosh, I'm still beating myself up over the hole. At least it was in the sink and I didn't try putting it in the countertop. New sink is much cheaper than new counter!

Oh, funny... I was walking with my friend this morning and she told me that her fiance didn't want her to go up on the roof to replace a shingle. He wants to hire someone to do it.

I'll refrain from any manly-sounding, "size/hole" comments, heheh, and instead say kudo's for taking things into your own hands, Ang, literally. We never learn if we don't try.

I'm the exact same way with fixing, (often after breaking!), stuff around the house too.

And hey, after sink #2, you'll be a bonafied, "hole-ist", and with bragging rights.

Oh, funny! "Eh-hum, it looked like 1 1/4" in diameter... guess I'm used to under-estimating circumference."
