I don't usually sew clothes, because they never seem to fit right. However, my friend is getting married in May, and to save money, I have volunteered to sew the bridesmaid's dresses (I am one of them). I carefully measured my bust area, use the prescribed guidelines for fitted garments (1" of ease), spend ALL DAY yesterday sewing the bust area up, only to find out that it's too big!! ARGH!!!

Why do the measurements never add up? It's as if they assume when someone measures oneself that they always cheat and make the tape too tight, because when I make anything according to my measurements they're always two sizes too big!!! ARGGHHHH!!!! Sorry, just need to vent.

I am going to redo it, two sizes smaller and see where I stand!!

Heh. I sew also and have had this problem... although I recently have given up on using pre-made patterns that aren't my own. I create my own now because as you said, their measurements never seem to be accurate. Sometimes its too big sometimes too small. Good luck with them though! I bet they will turn out beautiful!

I would recommend trying it on, inside out while it is still pinned before you sew it. This will help you to make alterations before sewing it all up first. It takes more time but saves time in the long run.

Best of luck!

Well, I did try it on, and it seemed a little big, but I chalked it up to not having the straps on yet (to hold the boobs up). Now I know better! I know what I need to change now, so it's just a matter of cutting more out. The other bridesmaid has more up top than me, so maybe I can salvage what I've sewn already for her.

Thanks for the tip. Now I know that if it doesn't seem to fit perfectly when pinned I need to make more adjustments.

I assume you don't have someone who can help you with the pinning? It is so much better when you can get a person who knows what they're doing to at least help you with the fitting.

I quit sewing clothing years ago, because it just gave me headaches like this. It's all quilts for me now!
