Have been ill for a few years, and as a result could not leave the house etc. Meant that my weight just took a sharp hike. Now trying to readdress this.

Wow, you don't do things by half measures.
Please, blog / use your profile or something else to record your progress. Actually, could a blog go on your new website .... show the real Dean etc, and drum up longer term business in that way? Something to think about. I for one would love to read about your experience ... this is not just about the race itself but the run up to. Goodness, a nervous anticipation here ... and not even doing it!
Good luck!

Sometime before you actually attempt this whole thing maybe. I'd imagine that's not the kind of thing you can cram for the night before.

Success is not a race, be patient. Success leads to success. Success is always a work in progress. Success doesn't come to you--you go to it. Success is a journey, not a destination. Focus on the process. Some people dream about success... while others wake up and work hard at it. Success is achieved and maintained by those who try-and keep trying. Everyday is a good day to SUCCEED! If at first you don't succeed-try, try again

That sounds nuts! Did they run a battery of tests on you to see if you were in good enough shape? Also, what will you guys eat? I imagine you'll need a lot of healthy stuff all the time.
Man, rowing across the Atlantic sure makes running a marathon look small.

I love to eat. Carbs is my weakness link that I always lose control in front of it.
I started running for fitness in 2007. Ever since I finished the 1st marathon (San Diego RnR 2007), I am addicted to running.
I started traineoing in Nov 2007. I have reached my goal weight in Jun 08 already. But, now, I don't care much about my weight. I care about it only if it affects my running performance.

37 days in that small boat and row across Atlantic. What a fantastic goal! You are great, Dean. All of us will love to hear the story of your journey. I bet it must require very tough training, like marine.

http://anotherfatguy.wordpress.com/ I'm looking at a total weight loss of over 130 lbs (60 kg for those of you in Europe like me...), from 150 kg to 90 kg (330 lbs to 198 lbs). I'm a 36 year old man and am REALLY tired of... well being tired.
So far I've been training like a mofo, and have totally revisited my diet - so far so good, 1/3 of my goal HAS been met - YIPPEE!!

Yes, this seems to be a good idea and one that is coming up regular. I am not generally very good at documenting things though looking at it I'll kick myself if I don't have a record of this. It'll give me something to read when I'm old and grey. Maybe then the grandchildren might actually believe that I was young once while I offer them werthers originals.

Thats what I'm talking about!! The reason I take on such challenges is to show what can be done if you put your mind to it. I'm just an ordinary guy, and I'm not trying to prove that I was born with super genetics (trust me, I wasn't. You just got to look at the photo). My ambition in life is to motivate others to push further and show them it actually can be done. I'd love to see you there Ara!
Quoting: adabesie Did they run a battery of tests on you to see if you were in good enough shape?
Not yet. I think it is more whether your nuts enough than how fit you are. Ha ha
Quoting: adabesie Also, what will you guys eat?
I've been reading up on guys eating the flying fish that land in the boat as you're rowing along?? I don't know the rules fully but food seems to be heavily regulated as part of the challenge. In the bottom of the boat is some emergency rations, but if you eat them you have failed.
Quoting: malibublue All of us will love to hear the story of your journey
I'm half considering writing a book about the whole experience starting from now. In fact I think I will start a journal at the very least to document it. I got that idea from you guys. I'll probably call it 'The Will of a Warrior' or something like that. What do you think? Then if I ever actually do it, I'll have to give all of you guys a copy for giving me the idea and keeping me motivated.

I have started two new blogs, one to follow my running and a Quest to a Marathon at blog.262quest.com and one to follow my weight loss at blog.2big.org, please check them out.
I am an IT professional / Developer which means I sit in front of a computer most of the day. This means very little exercise and plenty of time to eat.
I decided at the first of the year that I was going to lose weight. I started by changing my eating habits and started walking.
I did so for about a month and then added some weight lifting and started to run a little bit.
I have so far lost 29 lbs in just over 3 months and would like to lose just over another 50 lbs by the end of the year.
I have started running quite a bit more and am training to run the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th (10k)
I need all the encouragement I can get because to do this I am getting up every morning during the week at 4:30 to go running. With a wife and kids this is really the only time that I can consistently do what I need to do.
I am driven, but at times get a bit discouraged because I don't have anybody to work out with or run with.
All in All, I know I can do it, I just have to remember that when I don't do so well, it is in the past and what matters is going forward.

Now is a good time to have the nerves go crazy. That way you can get all that out of the way. You won't have time for the nerves later, so enjoy them now
Wow - 100 ft. It is stuff like that that would make me nervous too. However, you are subconsciously looking for the things to scare you right now since you just committed. Over time that will subside (a little) with the excitement I am sure.
What am I saying - there is a lot that would make me nervous. I have been out on a 60ft fishing boat in the Golf of Mexico and know how small I felt then..... not to mention the Atlantic in a much smaller boat.... without and engine.
OK - I will stop now. Time to just sit back and enjoy. I am sure I am not helping.

I wonder, are there "stand-ins", like actors use, should one team member have an injury or illness? 'Cause I'm guessing the rowing just won't work properly without the right amounts of ores in the water, right?
Or, is once a team member becomes compromised, that team is eliminated? MAN THAT WOULD SUCK FOR THE REST OF THE TEAM.
That comment regarding the dude off-boat, and if it would have been at night is mind-meltingly frightening to me.

No. It appears to be a system of 2 hours rowing 2 hours kipping for at least 16 hours a day.
Quoting: Minu Or, is once a team member becomes compromised, that team is eliminated?
Even if a member dies, a boat comes along takes away the body and the remainder just crack on.

Snoozing, sleeping, catching some zeds. At some point like I said before we will maybe rest up as a team, feast and go overboard for a dip. Also we have to clean the bottom of the boat to make sure the old barnacles and crap aren't messing with the aerodynamics.

Sorry, no jokes here.
Was just speaking to guys about people who did it completely unsupported, and any chance of even taking the body away would have been non-existent then??!!!
Seems like a lot of people have done some crazy stuff like this, so I'm trying to think of ways to make the attempt bigger and better??
Thats all there is to it. I have to work out how I am going to break the record!

So my next question is, how many men have died doing this? Considering the fitness level of the people that would do this, it's amazing to think there are casualties. It is an intense experience though!

You definitely have the required support! The well wishes and support of others can lead to amazing things along with your ambition!
