Last night I decided to put my name forward to row the Atlantic in 2009!!
I will be part of a 4 man team. The average crossing is about 2 months, and the record I believe is 37 days. The shortest point to point is nearly 3000 miles though weather conditions generally put you way off course for parts of the journey.
Can't wait!!! The warriors are rowing the Atlantic!!!!!

HOLY SHEEP SHIT!
THAT is one cool-ass goal, Dean!
Does one get paid for this, at least enough to cover the home bills while away?
Man, I'm really happy for you!
Can't wait to read about your incredible trek.
AWESOME!

Well, yes and no. Not directly, but I think the event will be quite beneficial for my coaching business, with huge levels of exposure and writing/ guest speaker opportunities will be sure to follow.
I guess deep down though this has nothing to do with business, I just want to experience it all, and this is an opportunity in a lifetime!!!!!

Yes, I'm keen to hear about all the details.
I'm guessing there is a bigger boat nearby which you all sleep/eat/excrete on, and of course, from which all the kick ass photos are taken, non?

I have started two new blogs, one to follow my running and a Quest to a Marathon at blog.262quest.com and one to follow my weight loss at blog.2big.org, please check them out.
I am an IT professional / Developer which means I sit in front of a computer most of the day. This means very little exercise and plenty of time to eat.
I decided at the first of the year that I was going to lose weight. I started by changing my eating habits and started walking.
I did so for about a month and then added some weight lifting and started to run a little bit.
I have so far lost 29 lbs in just over 3 months and would like to lose just over another 50 lbs by the end of the year.
I have started running quite a bit more and am training to run the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th (10k)
I need all the encouragement I can get because to do this I am getting up every morning during the week at 4:30 to go running. With a wife and kids this is really the only time that I can consistently do what I need to do.
I am driven, but at times get a bit discouraged because I don't have anybody to work out with or run with.
All in All, I know I can do it, I just have to remember that when I don't do so well, it is in the past and what matters is going forward.

Yes Minu, it would be nice to have a home to come back to. Things always work out though, I'm pretty happy go lucky like that, and I've always landed on my feet.
Quoting: jeffbristow Do you sleep on the boat?
Yes
Quoting: RMontgomery If you cross and land near Boston I will treat you to a Steak Dinner, lol.
Cool, though my geography is crap so I have no idea where that is. We actually finish in Antigua.
Quoting: Minu I'm guessing there is a bigger boat nearby which you all sleep/eat/excrete on, and of course, from which all the kick ass photos are taken, non?
Yes and no. There is a bigger boat about, and they'll come and rescue you if you are about to die. However, they are generally about 400 or so miles away from wherever you are so may not always be much use. Photos of the boat will probably occur when you leave, and when you land, or by other competitors in close proximity. Eating/ sleeping/ excreting will all take place aboard the tin bath. Well, the excreting will involve hanging over the side technically. I'm still brushing up on many of the details myself, though it appears that it is quite normal to just be naked throughout the race, as you are rowing in warm waters and you are constantly sweating/ exercising. (Hope we row near some honeybabes!! Imagine that!!). Also, we have to go overboard regularly and srcrub barnacles and stuff from the bottom of the tub as they slow you down.
Hope Jaws isn't about when we do that!!

Good question!! Though with the likes of yourself about Tim, you won't miss me for long. Besides, once I do return I'll have a lot to share and hopefully it will be worth waiting for. Maybe I should arrange some speaking engagements across the pond so that I can come and tell you all about it first hand.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

and Antigua is NO WHERE NEAR Boston, you'd have to row another 2500 miles for that steak The North Atlantic route brings you close to us...
