so we all get gas!!?? i eat alot of fruits and veggies and high fiber foods and cereal etc and so i get gas! lol. i am also lactose intolerant. i use beano, lactaid milk, and lactaid pills. gas-x and products like that dont work for me. the beano and lactaid pills barely work. so, any recommendations? i mean, what do you do when you are trying to work out? run to the bathroom every minute? sorry if this is too much info but there has to be someone else out here with this problem. i thought that eventually it would go away-that my body would get used to eating all of the fiber but it hasnt gotten better no matter what i eat. help!!!!

http://anotherfatguy.wordpress.com/ I'm looking at a total weight loss of over 130 lbs (60 kg for those of you in Europe like me...), from 150 kg to 90 kg (330 lbs to 198 lbs). I'm a 36 year old man and am REALLY tired of... well being tired.
So far I've been training like a mofo, and have totally revisited my diet - so far so good, 1/3 of my goal HAS been met - YIPPEE!!
Have met some great people here, and looking forward to meeting even more here on traineo - don't be afraid to bombard me with motivation - I'll take all you can give me :)

I think I have the same problem when I work out - but from the other end. I burp. Again and again and again.
I asked my doc who also works out - he said it has something to do with our organs relaxing when working out (cardio).
Dunno if there's anything to be done - I just try and be discreet by timing my grunts just right!!
Quoting: jenngetfit i mean, what do you do when you are trying to work out? run to the bathroom every minute?
Maybe sprint to the bathroom, count the calories you use sprinting, call it cardio? Hmm, maybe traineo should add that as one of our excercises?

I'm a grad student. I am trying to lose about 20 lbs to ease my knee pain.
I do cardio/weights 4-5 times a week. I also bike 7-8 miles on my daily commute. I love to work out, but boy do I love food, too... :-)

How quickly do you get gas after eating? If it's right away, then don't eat a gas-inducing food before a workout. Switch to something with protein instead (it's a better and more filling energy source IMO).
I don't have any suggestions on how to get rid of it in general though.... Sorry! Hope your farts don't stink at least!

It may be a case of eating right for your body type? I don't know the definite answer, but if a high fibre diet with huge amounts of f's and v's isn't right for your constitution then it probably isn't going to change.
I can't speak for your history, but I know that I am a regular kind of guy. (If you know what I mean). I don't need any assistance from an overdose of dietary fibre. In fact, I almost need the fats and proteins to slow it down and keep me well regulated. If I overdo the protein shakes, then I notice wind, so I wonder if it was related to the speed that I digested it? As in, if it happens in a short space of time, is that when the gas collects instead of being dissipated gradually? I have no expert idea, I can only mention my experience.
It may also answer why I have to concentrate on getting my f's and v's so hard (as you well know Jen), as naturally I don't gravitate heavily towards them.

I have started two new blogs, one to follow my running and a Quest to a Marathon at blog.262quest.com and one to follow my weight loss at blog.2big.org, please check them out.
I am an IT professional / Developer which means I sit in front of a computer most of the day. This means very little exercise and plenty of time to eat.
I decided at the first of the year that I was going to lose weight. I started by changing my eating habits and started walking.
I did so for about a month and then added some weight lifting and started to run a little bit.
I have so far lost 29 lbs in just over 3 months and would like to lose just over another 50 lbs by the end of the year.
I have started running quite a bit more and am training to run the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta on July 4th (10k)
I need all the encouragement I can get because to do this I am getting up every morning during the week at 4:30 to go running. With a wife and kids this is really the only time that I can consistently do what I need to do.
I am driven, but at times get a bit discouraged because I don't have anybody to work out with or run with.
All in All, I know I can do it, I just have to remember that when I don't do so well, it is in the past and what matters is going forward.

Quoting: jenngetfit hat do you do when you are trying to work out? run to the bathroom every minute?
That is why I wear an mp3 player at the gym.. If something happens I don't hear a thing. Maybe that is why I have no trouble getting the machines I want
I feel your pain. I have always wondered what exactly is causing it, since it is well spaced throughout the day. I get enough protein and fats, and I eat a fair amount of fruit... but not enough. My fiber intake is more than it used to be, but I don't come anywhere near the RDA. My Dr told me that I was doing good at where I was.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

Well, when your lifting weights you should always be focused on squeezing your glutes tight, it stabilizes the body and allows you to generate more power. If you're doing this you shouldn't have any escapees. Maybe it's your body's way of reminding you to squeeze your glutes.
As far as cardio, that's why I like to run outside.

still supposed to be squeezing those glutes during squats, it's just more difficult. In fact, that's what a lot of people teach during squat training. I've been told, "Pretend that you'll lose $5000 if you fart during a squat."

Man, when I hit the bottom end of a squat, there's no way I could get my buttcheeks to argue with------a wind, should it--------breeze by at the moment.
'Course, I do tend to do my squats from a wide-ish stance.

Thats a good way of thinking about it!! Ha ha
I always mentally imagine clenching a coin between the crevice, which for me makes it easier. You see, you can't think about what you don't want to think without thinking about it, can you? And thinking about not farting makes me want to more

I am sorry, but squeezing just will make the mp3 player needed even more, because when you do get an escapee, it will make itself more known.
I am happy that I do most of my running in the wee hours of the morning... cause at times I get a little extra push if you know what I mean. Sometimes I have people come up behind me in those wee hours, and I always wonder if they are going to come at the right (or wrong) moment. Oh well, most any runner would understand though.

that works too but I bet, like me, you really don't think about it anymore and the example is just given as a way to relay what you should be doing during heavy lifts.
By the way, I should mention that keeping those glutes tights also reduces the liklihood of weightlifting-induced hemorhoids. So if you're having trouble with those and your lifting heavy weights, be sure everythings tight back there first.
Seems like an appropriate thread to bring that up.

I actually still do, as it genuinely does work best for me. I've not let rip yet using this method as I'm concentrating on the muscle which by default is keeping the old ring locked. (Sorry for the terminology used)

My mental routine before heavy deadlifts just goes, hip-wide stance, check, shoulders over bar, check, bar close to shins, check, glutes tight - check, inhale, LIFT.
I guess maybe sometimes I do still think about it but I don't hear myself saying "Imaging clenching a pencil between your buttcheeks."
I use pencil because a coin sounds cold.

Eating every few hours means that your digestive system is always engaged at one point or another down the line.
Maybe experiment with eating less often, Jen--see if you get a break that way?

I usually workout on an empty stomach. In the case that you cannot or are unable, I'd recommend staying away from the foods that irritate you a few hours (or your "danger zone" if you know it) prior to a workout. My danger zone is about 20 minutes after drinking milk or having beans.
In my gym, the music is so loud that if I have to foof, I just let it go and nobody notices - it's a fact of the human body...
I am also lactose intolerant and NEVER drink milk or eat beans prior to a workout. This makes me have a "worry free" workout.
