So I have been working out, dieting, feeling good about myself and lost 5 pounds. I was so happy, I even felt slimmer and just better about myself. Then almost a week and a half later, I step on the scale and I gained it all back. Now I just feel like I am never going to get there, that I shouldn't even try, all my hard work feels like it was in vain. I feel like I am going to look like this for the rest of my life. I know its only 5 pounds, but I just felt so good, and now I feel like crap again.

The scale goes down, the scale goes up - what matters is that you're doing the right things and feeling good! Over time, the scale will go down, just stick to this!! Remember how good it feels to fuel your body with healthy food and to work out.

You might have just gained some water weight! I bet it will come back off. Try not to be discouraged. If you were feeling great that is what is important. Keep it up and it will melt off i'm sure! You can do this! I know how you feel.. We all have times where the scale goes up when we have been trying so hard and it never gets easier to see. But let it motivate you to keep going. Remember how great it felt and push to make sure you get to feel that way again!

We are all here for you!

Best Wishes!

Are you weighing at the same time during the day. Most people recommend weighing first thing in the morning after you use the bathroom and before you eat or drink anything. I can gain 5 lbs from morning to afternoon - having food and water in your stomach counts on the scale.

Don't give up! You can do this!! We're behind you!

Thanks everyone. I do feel better
While I was changing this morning my hubby said "hey, you look thinner!" it made my day. It may even be because I had dinner really really really late last night because of my shift, but I won't speculate, I'll just keep on pushing myself! Anyway, I feel better and I can do this!

I have a question though geared towards the ladies, when its that wonderful time of the month, does that affect your weight?

Lordy lordy yes! Usually retain before and drop afterwards. Actually my PT also told me that it can affect the results of body fat testing as well (hopes she knows what she is talking about cause I was a little disappointed this past week that mine had not dropped more - 33.4% down to 29.7%).

I posted a 4.2lb drop this week partially due to the fact I probably retain a little extra last week that disappeared this week. Overall it balances out but that's why one weight on the scales shouldn't be able to undo all the positives you have done!

Since I've been weighing every day: week before my weight was constant, and the DAY that I started I started dropping weight. I lost 2 lbs in 2 days! hahaha

Absolutely! I always subtract 2 or 3 lbs (in my head, not on the Traineo records) when I weigh over that week or so.

I wish I could run away from it, but that just doesn't seem to work.

Ara, you crack me up....

Stina, as everyone has already mentioned -- yes, your weight will fluctuate during "that" time, but more importantly, it will fluctuate PERIOD. (Crap... No pun intended.)

My weight fluctuates +/- 5 lbs *a day* depending on what I've eaten, what I'm wearing, how much water I've had... So I tend to weigh myself first thing in the morning to get a "standard" measurement. That has less noise.

Also, to minimize noise, you may want to do a 7-day moving average of your weight (I do this in Excel). Weigh yourself over 7 days, then average it on the 7th day. On the 8th day, average everything from the 2nd to 8th days. On the 9th day, average everything from the 3rd to 9th days. And so on. This way, you are tracking the overall trend, which prevents discouragement from daily variation.

I just punch in my weight every morning into traineo and look at the direction of their "best fit" line (yes, I know it's not a true best fit!) As long as it's trending in the direction I want it to (down) that's all that matters to me. Like Arby said, your weight can fluctuate for a huge variety of reasons; it's best to just weigh yourself at a consistent time (first thing in the morning works best imo) and watch that trend line... if you watch the daily movement too closely it's too easy to get distracted.

Or you can do what I do for other things; if the number goes up, use it as motivation to push harder, if it goes down, use it as an encouragement to stick with it! Two sides to the coin, but it's always the same coin.

Anyone have tips on how to stay motivated. Its so cold and dreary i'm starting to really lose my excersise mojo. I tried to buy a fitness mag yesterday while at the market - and i swear they were all out. Usually that gets me in the mood - if you know what i mean!

In the mood for what? They usually advertise some kind of product every other page lol. I get ProSource magazine, and they have good workouts. I have also bought some stuff because of it lol.

Ok so stepped on the scale today, i lost 5 pounds again! yay! And guess what, my "visitor left" last night, so obviously that's what was going on. So now I feel like an idiot allowing myself to get down on myself so easily.
Everyone have a great day!
