Oftentimes when people are stressed out or something bad happens they tend to raid the kitchen cabinets and do a lot of things they'll regret promptly thereafter. However, I've found that whenever something bad happens two words pop into my head and I go the gym to workout. Those two words are "Use it".
By "use it" I mean using that negative energy to fight on and make yourself a better person. I suppose it means converting destructive behavior into constructive behavior. I can even imagine hearing some guy yelling it over and over whenever things go wrong, and it's enough to motivate me to get my butt up off the ground and do something about it.
That girl that you've been crushing on for months just rejected you? So what? Use it. Do some military presses.
School getting tough and you're about to lose your mind? Use it. Hour on the treadmill to unwind and sort it out.
Every time you start to reach for some kind of fatty stress-relieving food I recommend you think hard about it. I guarantee that after you've gone to the gym you'll feel ten times better than before you started.

I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

Good post, Chris! I use this type of mentality especially when I'm craving food or (when I'm actually quitting) smokes...

I'm a plant enthusiast dedicated to eating whole, fresh foods. As for exercise, I regularly participate in: swimming, water aerobics, yoga, the elliptical machine, the stair stepper, running, and weight training. I try to switch up my routine a lot so that I don't get bored. My biggest obstacle to weight loss is eating when I'm lonely or sad, but I've started keeping a list on my fridge of other things I can do to occupy my time. So far it's really been helping!
Aside from health and fitness, I was married in December 2007 and am enjoying being married and decorating our apartment. I am currently finishing my last semester as an undergraduate, and hope to begin an English MA program Fall 2009. I love reading, quilting, cooking, hiking, swimming, decorating, gardening, and striving to protect the environment. I'm also really pleased that Barack Obama is going to be our next president.
Let me know if you need a motivator! Good luck in your health and fitness efforts!

Words to live by: "Now's the time to grab the steering wheel of your life. Delve deep within yourself and take responsibility for your health and behavior. Ask yourself hard questions and face the truth of what needs to be done. Weight loss is not always easy or fair but you are the only one that can lose weight for you. Take a turn for the better!"
Goals: 1) Lose ~45 pounds 2) Work out at least 6 days a week 3) Eat healthier consistently
I will reward myself at the following weights: 240, 235, 230, 225, 220, 215, 205, 200, 195, 190
I will reassess my goals after I have met the above goals.

I need to incorporate this into my life.
I've been just raiding the kitchen and/or visiting different dining establishments. The result? 4 pound weight gain this week.

Haha. I find this mentality works best when doing upper-body exercises. You can bet that you'll push for a few extra reps when you're burning up inside.

Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they haev to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary.
Impossible is NOTHING.
(I freakin LOVED that ad campaign)

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."
- Winston Churchill
That quote essentially sums up my philosophy in life; no matter how bad things get, there are always opportunities in it to grow. My girlfriend and I of 9 years split up about a month ago and, while it's easy to want to crawl under a rock and do nothing, I'm making sure I learn all the lessons I need to from the split and I'm using the emotions to fuel the "fire" in everything I do; most importantly, I'm not letting my life go on hold just because it's a fresh wound.
Not to mention that I have a lot more free time now and I get to save all that money I was gonna blow this weekend for Valentines Day! Ha!

Hah. This will be the first V-day in a while where I don't have to go crazy trying to figure out what to get that "certain someone". It's a bit refreshing and sad at the same time. So it goes.

Nice quote Clifford. I'd heard the quote:
'Winners focus on the fruits of success, while losers worry about the effects of failure' but Winston sums it up quite well. In fact the man was quite a guy.
Dr John Demartini, also has an interesting angle. He claims that there is no such thing as a positive/ negative event, it is only your perception of that event that applies a value to it. Everything is in equilibrium, so there is no good without bad, light without day, challenge without support etc... Both sides of the coin always exist, and it is what you choose to see that determines how you feel about the event. This is what coaches talk about when they people to reframe things. So a shit day, is not actually a shit day at all. That is just your perception of the events that unfolded. Interesting. A bit like what Winston was saying, the problem isn't positive or negative, it is how you choose to see it that gives it a value.
