Dr. Wright, a 40-year-old runner, decided to study people who kept training as they got older or began competing in middle age. She wanted to know what happens to them and at what age does performance start to decline.

Their results are surprising, even to many of the researchers themselves. The investigators find that while you will slow down as you age, you may be able to stave off more of the deterioration than you thought. Researchers also report that people can start later in life -- one man took up running at 62 and ran his first marathon, a year later, in 3 hours 25 minutes.

It’s a testament to how adaptable the human body is, researchers said, that people can start serious training at an older age and become highly competitive. It also is testament to their findings that some physiological factors needed for a good performance are not much affected by age.

Hounds,

The world best marathon time for men 70 or older (2:54:05) was set by a 74-year-old. That is more than four minutes faster than the winning marathon time at the first modern Olympics, the 1896 Games in Athens.

Now that's

Jack LaLane is still going at 93! He wants to swim 20miles for his 95th birthday. The only reason we deteriorate as much as we do is because we let out bodies do so(or illness). Not that I wanna be on his diet, "if it tastes good spit it out" not happening, but yeah. Still good advice.

Jack LaLanne & his wife Elaine. http://www.jacklalanne.com/ ...in their 90's yet they look so young.

Thanks for reminding me about Jack, Joseph. I used to watch his TV show when I was a little girl.

Don't say that! If you're getting old, that means I am, and I'm not ready yet!!!

He really is an inspiration. Even the things he did when he wasn't ninety are pretty amazing. I remember when I was a child my father told me about him swimming while towing boats and he was instantly my hero .

Thanks for the post. I discovered the joy of running late. I thought I was too old for the game. Now, I realize there is hope.

I'm a late bloomer too and I just love it.
I feel like I was just made to run.

that's just sick, stephanie.... my body tells me that 4 miles ran at a very slow, almost power-walking 12 minute mile is too much. to run 26 miles at that age is astounding.

the original athenian marathoner died upon reaching the city of Marathon, right?

The name marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek soldier, who was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon.

It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the Senate, exclaiming "Νενικήκαμεν" (Nenikékamen, 'We have won' or 'We are victorious') before collapsing and dying of exhaustion.
