One Year 19 Lbs lost.
For December 07 to December 08 the job is to lose another 17 lbs.
-- Coming up for nearly a year of Traineo. 22 lbs lost, 13 to go!
What a year! I want to thank Traineo and it's members, and my doctors and friends, and gym, and my walking and running training partner -- my dog -- who all have have been a big part of my recovery from a bad case of pneumonia last August, from high blood pressure in May and June, and support through herniated cervical discs in July August and the present.
Somehow, its been possible to keep the faith and keep going through the neck and arm pain, but even on some of those bad pain days, getting the exercise at the gym, on a C25K run, on a bike ride, or in the surf helps make it bearable.
A year ago -- at least sports-wise, for life is altogether another thing -- I was losing my sense of identity as a surfer and windsurfer, gaining a sense of identity as a cyclist, a runner, 9 months later reentering the surf, losing my ability to ride ... things came and went between hospital visits.
At times, all those things were stripped away -- and just to be able to walk down the block was an accomplishment. There were recoveries and sometimes just advil and bullish efforts.
It's good to be back in the surf and on the bike sometimes, neck/shoulder/arm pain notwithstanding.
My thoughts go out to all those Traineo members out there fighting their own health and spiritual battles...you know we are here in this small way.

Did anyone see that shooting star -- or meteor or whatever it was last night?...Wow!
New York, Long Island. I was out walking with my son and the dog at about 11:14 pm. We'd been viewing a couple of stars with his a telescope earlier -- Sirius and Procyon -- and later I was trying to figure out which among the other stars was Aldebaran ... so I was periodically looking up toward the West, toward the constellation Taurus.
And then it came very suddenly -- an intense ball of flaming light, with a very impressive trailing tail. And like that before I could say "OMG, did you see that?" it was gone.
It had come from behind -- -- seemed real close too -- as best I can describe in retrospect, from a few degrees above East, to a few degrees below West -- and from overhead to curving downward and Westward.
Lasted all of about a second, but it seemed like it was frozen in time.
Not that I've seen too many, but this was the brightest and most spectacular one I've ever seen.
I'm sure there are folk out there in big sky country who see these things all the time, but out here where there are millions of people, lots of ambient light, and many things to obscure the horizon, these sights are few and far between.
Still, one of the many great side benefits of walking the dog before bedtime.

Hi Phil,
One possible answer.
When I wa a kid (age 8?), I once saw a rocket separation at night and thought is was a UFO. What did your son think?

One of the things I enjoy the most about living in the country now is the fact that I can look up and see ALL the stars. I grew up in the country and really missed that when I moved to town. You can hardly see anything in the sky! I can only imagine what that shooting star would have looked like in a more rural area. Wow!
We moved to our new house on the outskirts of a small town about a year ago now, and I probably look at the stars every night. It's great!

Know what you mean, Angie,
I lived on the outskirts of town close to the country as a kid, and could lie on my back in a field, on the way home from a night out, sometimes, and just take it all in...no light pollution, just big amazing sky of stars.
Stephanie,
not really sure if he really saw it, he might have caught the tail end. It was over so quickly.

The skateboarder is via my 13 year old son. I am very computer challenged. I asked him to find a picture... this is what I got. Very fitting as I am leaping into better shape!!!
