I am 39 years old. My goal is to be in the best shape of my life in my 40s, in terms of endurance and strength.
I like weight training, cardio cross training (from treadmill running to kickboxing) and above all Yoga.
I like music, movies, reading fiction, travel, exercise. I am vegetarian because I love animals. I love cats best.

I have been guilty of an involuntary "owwww" or two in my gym-life, at the end of a set. But I am no grunter. Yet, I'd never sign up at that gym in the article. I'd take one look at the rules, and tell them I'm taking my membership someplace that likes their members.

I grunt, can't help it. Yogic breathing is better but I forget to do that more often than not.

My fitness regimen includes stationary cycling, light weight training and lots of walking around NYC. I'm a graduate of WeightWatchers and an enthusiastic advocate of its balanced approach to weight loss. I'm sure that I drink too much coffee and get too little sleep. :)
My goals are to maintain my weight in a healthy BMI/BF % range and forestall the toll of advancing age. :)
I think Traineo's established a great community and appreciate the support and information we share.

Leo: You are welcome to gyms in India if you ever encounter grunt-discrimination. I dont grunt because I dont lift weights that are heavy enough to need vocal encouragement to move from point a to point b. But a lot of the people in my gym grunt. If anything they get an appreciate nod from the non-grunters for their efforts and daring.
Yoga is about never forcing. So the rule of no-mouth breathing and always practicing without any strain on your face ( a smile if you can manage that), match with yoga. Incidentally ujayi breathing does create a hum in your throat. And Om breathing creates a powerful reverberation when a room of yogis are in the groove.
Heavy lifting and grunting belong together.
NYCinephile: I liked the term in your link: show-grunters. Those can get a bit annoying. But not enough to warrant an eviction.
I am amazed that a club can revoke a membership. Do they refund fees when they do that? If they dont, are they allowed by American laws to get away with it?

@Vrinda: I'm not quite sure what the policies and applicable law are. Gyms in Manhattan are as packed as subway cars during rush hour. This is one of the reasons I choose to work out at home.

Quoting: Vrinda ujayi breathing does create a hum in your throat
Yea, I put down 'yogic breathing' and then realized that I didn't know enough to talk about it. I was referring to a controlled exhalation more like blowing out a candle than by blocking the air at the back of the throat.
I sit here writing this, making strange 'uhh' and gurgling sounds to be sure of what I mean. Hope no-one's listening.

I bet. When I lived in San Francisco, tried going to a major gym and it was too much. Found a smaller neighborhood place to go instead. Not living in a metro area anymore, I still prefer for the smaller single-owner gyms.

My job is great but keeps me at my desk too much, and I'm the office chocoholic as well! I have decided that before my 40th birthday (this year) I will run a 5K. I have begun the training. Wish me luck!

There's a great gym near where I work - with NO parking lot, and all the evening classes start before the evening parking spots open up. Grrrr....
I sing along with my mp3 player when I work out, which, given my voice, is probably MUCH more offensive than anyone's grunting.

Snakeophelia,
Hey! I'd love to workout next to you. Especially if your voice is really as bad as you claim. You singing out of tune, lost to the rest of the world while you pedal furiously (or whatever), is such a cute mental picture. The reaction of other gym goers (amused, startled, ?) will be very entertaining too.

I'm a 42-year-old graphic designer / computer programmer / information architect / non-profit fundraiser / spiritual teacher / boardgame designer aspiring to become an ordained interfaith minister in the next couple of years in order to provide spiritual counseling.
I have a 20-year-old daughter who's brilliant, lovely, and stunningly creative. I'm currently single and dating, and I seem to be falling in love again, which is wonderful.
I've been overweight since I was 11 or 12, and have lost hundreds of pounds over the years. Two years ago I had an epiphany and at 326 pounds, my all-time high, began to take care of my body. Injuries from an auto accident delayed my continued weight loss until I managed to heal sufficiently in October of 2006. The difficulty still flares up regularly, limiting my exercise, but it's improving all the time, and I'm steadily losing weight nonetheless.
My biggest breakthrough was a couple of months ago when I realized that all of the childhood stuff that had been contributing to my body-image and eating troubles could be forgiven without need to accept or come to terms with them. Forgiveness is as basic as asking yourself if being unhappy about the situation or event is serving you now, and if not, accepting that it's no longer important and moving on.
I'm glad to have found Traineo, as the tools have helped keep me on track and the incredible people in the community have kept me inspired, informed, and ignited!

I'm fortunate to have some decent gym equipment at home, as I'm certain that I'd be kicked out for singing and acting like an idiot in general, "conducting" the music I'm listening to, "playing" along with the drums, air guitaring, etc.
Actually, it's probably pretty amusing for about 20 seconds.
