You bet they are!! So long as you're observing form, form, form then you are on a one way trip to looking and feeling damn good!!

R.I.C.E. rocks.

Spyke, if the thought of no running makes you cringe, maybe think about doing some other forms of cardio for a spell to give those knees the break they clearly need. Rowers, ellipticals, power-walking on a good, steep incline are all fine ways of busting one's hump while being kind to the knee-joints.

Plus, mixing it up'll break those new spanky shoes in nicely so by the time you return to running, you'll at least be able to eliminate that part of the equation, should the knee pain persist.

It's amazing that squats can actually HELP - the first time I saw them done I thought there was NO way that I'd ever be able to do them because of my knees.

Who knew?

Actually it DOES make me cringe (weird, but true) - now that I've gotten into it I look forward to it!

power walking might not be a bad idea - that way I'll at least have the treadmill for comfort

but I need to know when the pain is "good" or "bad"

How I have always heard it said is this:

IN VERY GENERAL TERMS:

If it is muscle pain that goes away with rest it is good pain
If it is joint pain, or non muscle pain, and it seems to linger it is bad pain

I second that! The more you get accustomed to working out, and weight training in particular, muscle pain will become a daily thing for a while and you will surely recognize it... The burning, tensing up, tentative-stepping-and-moving kind of pain! The other limits your ROM and is not consistent with the mechanics of the exercise you are doing.

I had a minor tear in my ACL and damage to both knees and I LOVE squats! An isolation machine is about 10X more likely to cause me knee pain than doing squats. Lately I've backed off the weight a bit too to work on my form and glute activation... Sounds funny, but the more muscles I'm incorporating fully, the more weight I'll move.
