If candy all looked like this, cutting down on them wouldn't be a problem.

Is it just chocolate ... in the shape of bugs or is it actually bugs?

It's all just chocolate, except the bodies have corn flakes (crunchy, yum!), the head is candied orange peel, and the legs are dried squid jerky.

No bugs were actually harmed in making them.

I should also add that in Japan, youchuu are fairly popular as pets (or rather, the beetles are). You can buy real youchuu or beetles at almost any department store, let alone pet store, for $5 to $10 -- so the sight of the little critters doesn't cause quite the same reaction in Japan. I was never in Japan at the right time to buy youchuu, but I did buy a pair of kabutomushi beetles in July last year. Pretty neat.

Penn State has an insect fair every year where the buggy treats are real. I've never gone and haven't had much desire to try any Chocolate Chirpies anyway.

Shrimps, crabs, and lobster are close enough to being insects that it shouldn't be that strange.

I have to admit, I draw the line at eating insects. Part of me says it's not rational and it's only my cultural conditioning, but there you go.

I heard a saying once though: "Never ask what it is you're eating until well after you're done."

Ara, The Great Insect Fair is in October. Here is the direct link to their site. I always thought about going, but I've never done it. You know how it is when you live by something. You only take people there when they're visiting from out of town.

I always meant to mention I liked your throwback Steelers jersey in your photo.
