For those of us that are taking classes this semester, how're things going? How are you adjusting to the added stress of school in terms of diet and exercise? Are you still making time to train (workout)? If not, what are you going to try to do so that you can continue your fitness goals while still maintaining your classes?

As for me, it's not too much of an adjustment yet. But my first day of classes was yesterday, and none of my classes seem like they'll be easy A's. Time will tell. But I'm committed to my workout plan because I want results!

I'm in grad school, but I was very lucky this semester to have my classes in the afternoon, since I am a night owl. Now I just make sure I get up in time to do 45-1hr of cardio and so far I've kept it up.

The good part about school for me is that since i stay off campus, i make my own lunch! Come back home and get 45-1hour of cardio atleast 5 days a week!!!

Heh, I never knew how to study! I'm not a student, but I think I will be signing up for an ASL course this spring... And maybe swing or ballroom dancing

I'm a middle schooler. One of about 2 or 3 on traineo.

It's going okay because I don't get a lot of homework, but it's so hard to make time for everything else (like having a social life). And I just had like a major breakdown because I'm getting a B in my math class (I've NEVER gotten anything less than a 90% before, and this B is an 85%...I actually started crying in class, and when I got home I started screaming and kicking things for a good hour.)

Does that freak out count as a workout? I was exhausted afterward...

I don't know Mikaela. You sounded like my g/f back when she was in high school. I wish I got grades above a C. If I got a 75% my parents took me out to celebrate, haha. Your lucky you are doing so good in school, keep that up.

As far as balance school and working out, don't ask me. School was always my last priority.

Thanks.

It's normally my second priority (after sleep), because it's the only thing I've ever been good at. Haha I'm rather pathetic in the talent region.

A friend and I are taking a nutrition class to keep healthy eating in our minds (while simultaneously gatting Health credit ;)) and have agreed to meet up and walk circles around the large and hilly campus after class and have lunch before going home. I wrote out schedules for both of us that look like school schedules, taking into account our usual daily routines (like hygiene), classes and workout times. Hopefully it will work as planned. *crosses fingers*

Mikaela, take it easy on yourself! I am just like you - straight A's. I've only gotten 3 B's in my whole life from kindergarten through college. Trust me when I say Don't make yourself crazy over your grades. Break downs like that just aren't worth it. If you get a B, life WILL go on, you WILL get into a good college, and you most certainly still can have a wonderful wonderful life. Remind yourself that if you are doing your best, then you have absolutely nothing to feel bad about. And I don't mean your best as in freaking out studying for 60 hours a week. I mean your best as in doing all the homework and reading all the chapters and studying for a reasonable amount of time for the tests.

Learn to balance now! It will only get harder in high school and college! You can do it!! Remember B means Bravo!

Yeah I used to get straight A's, until I realized nobody cares what grades you got, and I could increase my beer drinking time by ten-fold if I accepted B's.

I'm not sure that was such a positive lesson.

But life, ah, she's a cruel teacher, often giving the test before the lesson.

Interesting discussion. I'm not a student, but I'm a high school principal...and I have a lot of late nights at basketball games, volleyball, soccer, etc., not to mention meetings and things of that nature. I've been working out 3x or more for two weeks...I feel better, lighter on my feet, and I've been sleeping...but it's SO hard to maintain!

I'm in grad school and I personally find it very difficult to keep the workout plan, eat healthy quick meals and at the same time study and go for classes. I draw out a plan every week but university never goes as planned and it just screws up my workout schedule. But so far I've managed to juggle both, but not without stress.

I'm earning my Masters online and still have a hard time juggling papers, reading and discussion requirements. But I have to do it...My first priority is exercise, then school.

School has not suffered at all but I do see my family less, which is only temporarily.

I took 7 classes last fall, and did two hours a day of workouts, managed to get a 3.12 on top as well. The key for me is never to get out of the state of mind, school or excersize wise. I took a winter course and kept the routine of working out 2 hours a day. By the time my winter course ended I only had a weekend off, and I started out again with 7 classes this monday and I'm still working out 2 hours a day. Eating isn't bad I bring my snowboarding backpack fill it with my books for the day, then pack my 6 meals and fruit and i'm good to go. LAso since I live only 2.5 miles from school, I bicycle every day when the weather permits.
Since Sept 3rd- 276lbs 33 % bd fat

It's been just the first week of school for me, which means a really easy hw load so I have been exercising like a maniac for about 6 days a week.

One of the most difficult things on campus as opposed to home is eating, because I have to eat at the dining hall and they usually don't have a big selection of health foods, whereas at home I can make anything I want.

does anyone else struggle to eat healthy at their cafeteria?

Elle,
I always had a hard time finding anything good to eat at school. I would either have something small like a salad or fruit and cheese tray (expensive and not very satisfying) or try to walk home and make lunch and walk back in a gap between classes.

This semester I am doing intermittent fasting which is an amazing way of getting around the problem of limited options on campus -- I just don't eat!

Of course, this isn't necessarily an approach for everyone, but I'm just finding it so, so much easier. I also have more energy and mental clarity for my classes - I really notice an improvement compared to last semester.

I do find it hard to get up early (6am) and leave enough time for working out before class. I try to make sure I workout on days with no classes (Tues, Thurs, Sat) so I can get at least three good training sessions a week.

I'm a grad student and I am taking some classes. I have had a decent time managing my workload and exercise routine. Some tips:

- Spend the money to rent a locker at the gym. Store gym clothes there. If you are a heavy sweater (like me), store 5-6 gym shirts there and change them daily (so you don't reuse a wet, smelly shirt the next day). This makes it easier to fit a workout between classes without arriving dirty and grimy.

- Get better time management skills! Some tips: start your homework the day it is assigned; skim your book/slides before lecture; read away from your computer and other distractions. The time saved can be invested into sleeping / waking earlier and hitting the gym with the savings.

- Eating well is incredibly difficult. I regret to say I have no solution -- I usually make sandwiches at home and bring them with me for lunch, then cook my dinner at home. If you eat on campus, take care to manage your portions.

- The greatest enemy of a student's health is SNACKING!!! Keep an eye on those empty calories. I have replaced my snack food with fruits and 100-calorie bars so I know what's going into my body. It's very easy to slip as a student.... Stay strong!

Good luck!!

Good tex!! I love gyms that are open late. Ours is open till 1am.

Unfortunately, it's so packed with New Year's Resolution people (pardon me for being irritated, but I've seen these guys every January for a few years now, and never again after that... stop jamming up the gym!!! Plus it's too small for a campus this size. )

Definitely keep it up when you can. The most amazing thing is that when you work out and your homework isn't done, you magically become more efficient to finish your homework in the time remaining.
