I saw this article online that says “You burn about 650 calories by donating one pint of blood.†How can that be? 650 calories is like me running a 10k. does anyone know why or how this could be? Seems too good to be true!? Link->

My weight has gone up and down repeatedly in the last few years. I managed to lose a lot of weight before getting married 2 years ago, but have since gained most of it back.
I hope to find new motivation on this site, and hopefully make some new friends. This time I want to lose weight and keep it off. I'm trying to not think of it as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.

It seems a little fishy to me too. But if it is true, I guess I burned an extra 650 calories last Friday!

I'm an artist from the Bay Area. I gained a bunch of weight by working too much and neglecting to exercise amongst other things. I work in video games/new media and would love any advice on losing weight from people who also sit at computers all day. I have about 80lbs to lose (ouch!) and I plan to do it within a year and a half. Other than that I play games, listen to music, and work on my '63 corvair. Looking to get into camping and maybe back into snowboarding.

It's from the MAYO clinic. I think it must be real.

I am a contractor for a monolithic IT firm. This translates into a lot of time spent sitting. I have always been a big guy, but I am tired of being obese so I am going to utilize the power of community to hold my feet to the fire to stay active.

I agree that the source is reputable. I am wondering if that is the calories required to replace the pint. That would not surprise me at all actually.

I hope by having this page that it will hold me accountable and keep my focus on my health. I have Type II Diabetes but I am able to control it without medication by exercise and a low carb lifestyle. My weight was 303lbs. I also was diagnosed with Hypertension with a blood pressure of 190/94 with a heart rate of 92. I now have it down to 131/73 with a heart rate of 68. All by low carb, exercise and a lot of encouragement from family and friends.

Maybe that is from the body working harder to replace the blood or working harder while it replaces the blood.

If this is true, you've got to wonder how vampires stay so slender.

With a family history of obesity, staying fit and losing weight for me are more than nice-to-haves: They're essentials.

Well, at the very least, there's a drop in water weight!
I wonder if regenerating lost blood is really such a calorie intensive process.

My job is great but keeps me at my desk too much, and I'm the office chocoholic as well! I have decided that before my 40th birthday (this year) I will run a 5K. I have begun the training. Wish me luck!

If this is true, I can't believe the HR department where I work isn't trumpeting it. They try everything else - cookies, time off, gold stars - to get us to donate!
I'm anemic, so I never donate. They do have a lower weight limit for adults, though, so perhaps it really does take 650 calories out of you.
