I'm a network engineer in the Great Northwest and I co-host a podcast at geekfit.com with Jason Tucker (abstrakone).
When I started this journey in March 2005 I weighed around 400 lbs.
The thing that jarred me into motion was a picture my wife had taken on Christmas morning 2004. I was sitting in a low armchair wearing my usual outfit: sweats and a t-shirt. It went from belly to legs to feet -- no knees!! I said, "oh hell no."
I got myself a gym membership and started out swimming every morning. That progressed to the treadmill and finally to where I am today which is riding a bike 7-10 miles at a clip and playing DDR at the local bowling alley a few days a week.
It feels so good I think I'm going to keep going. ;)

It's corny, but that's what I call my journey to a healthier and thinner me. At the beginning of 2004 I figure I weighed right around 400 lbs. I didn't have a high-capacity scale, so I couldn't be sure. By the time I bought one, it'd been 6 months and I was down to 365 lbs.
I started at the gym swimming and moved from there to the treadmill and finally to a resistance/cardio program of my own design. So far I've lost 97 lbs and 7.4% body fat.
On to the pictures. The forums enforce a resizing of images so these look a little grainy no matter what dimensions I choose. Click on them for the larger/clearer version.
My old office on January 25th, 2004. The B&W thing is a little dramatic, but I think at the time I figured it made me look less heavy than I really was.
This was taken this morning. My wife loves this shirt for some reason.

I'm a 26-year old woman who is working towards maintaining an active lifestyle, for good...! I'm not working towards our culture's ideal of the perfect woman, only to be healthy and energized. I work full time and am working towards entering a graduate program in Nursing, so my schedule is tough, but I can make it!

Steven,
You have made an excellent transformation thus far and I hope you meet and exceed the goals you have made for yourself. I would imagine that in addition to your exercise regimen you have also implemented some modifications of your diet, can you share with us some of the significant steps you've taken in that arena? There are always new strategies for the rest of us to learn.
Thanks and good luck!

Excellent progress so far steven, you must be so proud of yourself.
Long road ahead, but you're speeding on the highway now and it'll pass in no time :)
How does it feel to know that in a 'non-too-long' period of time, you would have achieved your goals?

Thanks for your comment, Suzanne. Yeah, I definitely had to work on the diet and I think that's made the biggest impact. When I started I was eating 2-3 meals a day (usually 2) and breakfast was almost always the casualty. I ate whatever sounded good at the time and convenience was on the menu more often than not (i.e., fast food, restaurants, etc.).
The first thing I did was sign up for a free account over at Backpack so I could track my intake from wherever I was. The template started out with headings like: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner, dessert. The meter was every 2.5 - 3 hours.
Before long it evolved into: pre-workout, post-workout, early morning, morning, midday, afternoon, evening. I wanted to track my pre & post workout intake and the term "snack" didn't work for me anymore. I was spacing my food out over 3 hour increments and eating less between meals 1 and 2 than between meals 2 and 3 didn't make much sense.
Lately I've been falling off with the food and as a result I've been maintaining at 300 - 305 lbs for the last couple months. After reading Nick's post and hititng a few articles here at traineo, I'm inspired to re-double my efforts and get back to it.
I just got back from Wild Oats with some dried fruits, fresh fruit, a few snacks (still healthy, but snacky), and a kick ass turkey, brown rice, and veggie thing from their deli. Very tasty.

Thanks a lot. Your post has inspired me to get back into the game again. I'd been rocking the cardio, but the intake was falling off. I'm back.

F'realz, man. I'm excited as hell and relatively it's not that much more weight to lose. It's going to be a lot easier than the first dozen pounds were, that's for sure.

i've always wanted to be healthy and in shape, but been too lazy to really do it...until now. something in me finally said: "hey cindy. it's time to get your shit together." so i did. and i feel great.
i am currently on hiatus from my studies at columbia university in new york city. i'm a sociology major and hope to do my thesis and graduate work on the complex relationship between humans and drugs. i hope, ultimately, to split my time between tenured professorship, musicianship, and mothership.

I've been out of loop on working out for about 2 years. I used to be a fitness fanatic and now that i've gained about 15 lbs, I'm ready to take it off. I'm currently taking more of a cardio approach, rather than muscle building. Road running is my favorite, I hate treadmills. My goal is to run a 5k in under 23 minutes (I'm at 26 right now, down from 30 when i started a month ago).

I've been meaning to make a list of things that will keep me from ever going back to that weight. There are things I couldn't do and things that I had to do because of my weight that are built-in deterrents at this point.

Working a lot makes it very easy to come up with excuses as to why I can't work out or eat healthy. It's time to end the excuses, get out there, enjoy some workouts and eat healthy foods. I'm hoping that Traineo can help.

Mathematics graduate, looking for direction in life... I think I've got it now.
I love cycling and am pretty good. However, with a heavy heart, I've had to swallow my pride and accept that I'm just too old to realise my aspirations of the professional ranks. My backup plan is to become a cioccolatere (in Italia)... So I'll be keeping my cycling-up, to avoid the consequences of a sweet-tooth! After all, I still have it in me to get into the upper echelons of the amateur ranks.

Fantastic work, SK.
And thanks too for being so open and brave in revealing yourself to us. I think one of the reasons it's easier for some of us today than it used to be is we have so many examples of people who are bravely putting themselves out there and showing it can be done. I don't think I am alone in thinking all the fitness experts don't really understand our lives or how we got in these positions. I think it's great that no matter what our situation, we can now find someone who has stuggled with a similar thing who will courageously open themselves up. Thanks, and hope I can keep up with you as you get to where you want to be.

Hello! My goal isn't weight related, it's fitness and diet related. I'm a 42 year old mother of three and very busy. I run 4 days a week 3-4 miles per run. Not a fast run, but a nice jog. I practice my own style of "yoga", listening to my body and giving attention where needed. I also do my own style of Pilates for core strength. I meditate at the end of every workout session for about 10 minutes.
I would like to improve my diet. I eliminated alcohol, caffiene, and soda about 10 days ago. Recently, I purchased a juicer and have been juicing and drinking approximately a gallon of water a day for the past 10 days.
I guess I'm doing a little detox! Feeling great so far and looking forward to hearing from the traineo community.

I'm making a conscious effort to change my weight and improve my quality of life. I've battled with gout and other ailments that are directly affected by my diet and weight. Ever since I started watching my diet and exercising, the weight started coming off with little effort and health problems started going away.
Since I started exercising, the weight is coming off more. I can't wait to get down to my target weight.
