I'm basically trying to get in shape and be healthy...
diaryofthefatman.blogspot.com
I like participating in sports but I want to be more competitive. Also I'm with Kevin Spacey from American Beauty - good reason :)
I'm looking to lose about a hundred lbs in the course of a year, and basically to just consistently get better. And I love comments and messages, so keep 'em coming!
I talk about goal setting a lot, how about I actually set some?
Well it's time to revisit goals... I didn't do too well with my end of year plans, but learned some things and changed my plans up a bit as I went along. During the 5-7 weeks of the year, I was able to put on about 8-10lbs of muscle, and stay at the same actual weight. The plan is to start the Strong Lifts 5X5 program to supplement the Couch to 5K program, and that should last the next 8-12 weeks.
I'm updating goals as well. Lowering cholesterol remains a goal, and I'll find out about that at the end of August.
Been bouncing around a bit, but getting a little stricter again and will monitor that over the next 3-4 weeks. I feel poised to really lose some weight again, so I'm looking forward to the healthy eating and additional exercise.

You tend to lose fairly evenly across your entire body. You will notice it in the face the most as there is generally less there and the structure will be more pronounced...

I wish I would lose in my face. I seem to start losing in the belly first, then the face after about 15 pounds or so.

I'd be happy with the face, belly and chest. Everything else just needs tightening up. Why can't you spot reduce? How rude of our bodies to torture us by getting rid of fat where we don't really need to lose it!
LOL!

Unfortunately, I've lost weight in my chest. Most women are not happy about this I've lost weight in my arms and abs too. I think the type of excercise you do plays a big role in where you loose. I do kickboxing 3 times a week (lots of pushups, ab and arm work). I do eliptical and treadmill 2 days a week. I think this excercise also helps my abs and gluts. I have definately lost weight in my face and that's great because that's what people notice first!

I guess in a way it is sort of like spot reducing.... before I started kickboxing, my arms were definately not as defined as they are now. I do a combination of running and walking on the treadmill.... but never in the same sequence.

Definition is from muscle growth, not fat loss. You lose your fat from all over, at a relatively equal proportion and that you cannot target or alter.

Awesome Diane, that's the way to do it! The more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn too
Patience and understanding the small or subtle changes that are occurring when the ones you want or expect are not - there's a reason this is a lifestyle; there's always something we want to improve.
I'm doing good w/ meals, just heated up #4 so I'm on target for the day... Also just switched the laundry - working from home isn't so bad after all!

Quoting: jenngetfit im not sure the reason why you cant spot reduce.
The same reason you can't peel only one part of an onion... I've always thought of losing fat like that--a thin layer at a time.
But typically, I lose it in my face first too, and my stomach last. Which is why I think I look like a pin head.

I've seen it in my arms first...
But I wonder if thats just the muscle growing..! I like it either way... I measure everywhere weekly and my arms haven't changed much at all.. yet theres curve showing!
I did kick boxing for a show while years ago and loved it, was really tuff and really good.
Gunna start it up again next year for sure. Its on my '08 goals list =)

True. But aren't you glad that's not how it works? We'd all pay the most attention to that one body part that we hated the most...
If I could have 'crunched' my abs until they were rock hard, the rest of me would have been disgustingly flabby & saggy. I would have looked like a bean bag chair with a flat front.
Instead, I learned how to devote equal amounts of time to ALL of my body parts.

well at least we are all making changes in a positive direction and since it isnt coming off in all the places we want it just means we have to keep working at it. i was actually at the doctors office today so i asked my dr this question and he said that you dont lose from your face down-it depends on genetics mostly and your background ( i.e ashkenazi jewish).

I love to eat. Carbs is my weakness link that I always lose control in front of it.
I started running for fitness in 2007. Ever since I finished the 1st marathon (San Diego RnR 2007), I am addicted to running.
I started traineoing in Nov 2007. I have reached my goal weight in Jun 08 already. But, now, I don't care much about my weight. I care about it only if it affects my running performance.
|
# Posted: 13 Dec 2007 06:22
Like most of you, I lose weight in my belly first. Then, I lose weight all over, my shoulders, arms, back,...etc. But, my legs are. They are more "defined." I do running mostly. My leg muscles are developed better thru months of training. But, my upper body are still...well not fit-looking. I think I need to incorporate weight training to my upper body to balance out.

Kat, Sian, - You could certainly punch and kick a heavy bag. However, there are definately techniques and drills that are taught that make the workout effective. Kickboxing is not only great for the body but for the mind/stress relief. I go to a kickboxing gym in which boxers take classes for fight training and conditioning. So I get to learn proper kicking and punching techniques. I absolutely love it!

You lose weight first in the last place you put it on.
Everybody has a genetic programme which dictates the order of where they put on weight and it leaves in the exact reverse. Typically, men put weight on their belly then chest first and by default the six-pack is the last thing to come back. No amount of sit-ups or crunches will change this, the belly will lose weight last if that is where you put weight on first. Fact.
With women it is typically the bum and thighs that gain weight first, and come in shape last. It is not uncommon for ladies to have large bums and a slim waist whereas blokes are the reverse. Again, the stepper and tums, bums and thighs exercises only conditions those muscles. It won't increase fat loss in those trouble areas until your genes decide it is next in line to see a reduction. Fact
Ladies bosoms are one of these areas that is affected by genetics. As much as lasses love the swell (and so do we!!) when they are grown, if your genetics mean they only come ripe when you're above a certain weight then you'll lose them when you get your tight ass. (And a tight ass definitely beats a ripe pair, but that's just my viewpoint). Some ladies still maintain an impressive rack with a slim physique, and they generally make a lot of money out of it. Though it is the same for us boys, as there is always the guy who gets a firm physique in 6 weeks when it takes everyone else 6 months? Who said genes played fair. We've all got the same potential to look good though in the end, and we all do!

For me, when I first decided to get my body back, the very first place I lost weight was hands down, in my mind.
Once that load was off, everything fell into place to get me where I wanted to go.

Something Dark Side
I've been interested in losing weight and gaining muscle here at traineo since late 2007. Its not until mid 2008 that i've actually started my training routine 5 days a week. Trying to get to under 19% body fat.

What happens if you don't have that much body fat? I mean for myself I'm still... thin. I dont have much weight around the arms or stomach. Wouldnt the main place be then the backside area? Thats the only area where I can see... fat. lol
