Simple question...

For those of you in the midst of your fitness journey, what's motivating you to put in that extra work on the treadmill, or lift those extra pounds on the weights? What stops you from pigging out on all of the deliciously unhealthy foods the world has to offer?

Simply put, WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

Mostly, I motivate me....

I know what I want and I know what it takes to get there. I'm not perfect, but I don't care about the times I slip up as I know how hard I work the rest of the time.

What motivates me to lift those extra pounds are the people I lift with. I'm very competitive and no one can push you better than a workout partner that is stronger than you are

But, first and foremost, you have to want it. You can't get that motivation from anyone but yourself, the others are just tools for sharpening that focus.

The goal is what motivates me.

If I want something enough i'll do whatever it takes to do it. Its a mental thing... but if I ever stop wanting something then I can easily find myself kicking stuff to the curb.

After spending so many hours prepping for my last goal (combine) I found myself going 'now what?' I spent all this time, got in this shape, and needed a new direction. So I found myself wanting to change things up a bit. Now I'm motivated to trying to lose some body fat so I can have a nice beach bod when I go to the beach at the end of July. Call me crazy but thats my goal.

Right now I'm working hard @ dieting (eating less after I trained myself to eat alot to gain muscle). I'm still working out and trying to walk 30-45 minutes a night. I enjoy this time with my wife and 2 boys (3 1/2 and 2 years old). My eldest ran 4 laps around the track the other night which surprised my wife and I... not bad for a 3 1/2 year old

i've set competitive goals, and i think it'd be awesome to meet them, particularly in my swim and run. i want to see how much my body is capable of improving after being 235 pounds in '05/'06. i never want to be like that again, and in the other direction, my competition is better and continuing to improve.

My return to a state of wellness/kickass-ness keeps me going as, I'm liking how I look, I'm loving how I feel and as the ole calendar pages turn, I want to do all I can to prolong it for as long as possible.

I started working out because I noticed a change in how quickly I became tired. Once I started working out it was...okay. I ran with my older brother once while I was visiting him and he really motivated me without even knowing it. As I was begging him to stop so I could take a breather, he said, "Whenever I want to stop I just spell out my son's name in my head. C-A-L-E-B! ...because I'm no spring chicken and I have a 4-year-old and a 10 month old to stay alive and healthy for." That really made me just want to stay healthy so I can be around for my family and future family.

it's actually a pretty good test to see if you're going at a good pace, too. between breaths (or gasps), you should be able to get out several letters if you're going for distance, or only one at a time if you're trying to maximize your exertion.

Cardio-What motivates you?

To stop from pigging out I just think of what will happen if I do.

To keep me working out is the thought that I want to look great in a bathingsuit.

I want to be fit and healthy for my daughter and husband.

As shallow as it sounds, the thought of having a 6 pack.
I was always insanely fit as a teenager, and am again now, but have never been able to make the commitment to eat healthy and exercise heard enough to get there.
Now I think I've finally got the mindset and commitment to get there, and I don't want to let a few chips or a bar of chocolate stand in my way. So when ever I'm tempted I just think to myself "How hard are you going to have to work to burn this off?" and then I back away from the plate.

What motivates me?

Initially, I was motivated by trying to lose weight and be a better looking person.

Since I finished my 1st marathon last June, the only motivation to push me exercising harder and eating healthier is to be a better runner. I wish to be a sample to show others how powerful and joyful running is.

That is the essence of living, to BE.

You are fantastic Glovia and I think you have touched a lot of peoples lives with your example.

You've made a big difference to mine

You are an inspiration to me too Glovia!

I think what motivates me is thinking about the type of person that I want to be... do I want to be the type of person who sits around eating and watching TV and doing a whole-lotta-nothing with my life? No.... Do I want to be the type of person who finishes her PhD and runs marathons in her spare time... Hell yes!!! So every night when I am falling asleep I try to picture that person that I want to be and think about the things I need to do to achieve what I want...

Thanks for your words, Jen, Dean and Ms. M.

Ever since I love running, I have the urge to let others share my joy. I wish I could do something to help others to discover running is such a simple and yet powerful thing to do. I told my private coach (referred by Dean) that one day, I wish to open a runner café to tailor meal for runners and promote the activity.

initially i was motivated by co-workers.. we had a 30 day $50.00 a person bet to see who could lose the most weight via diet & exercise, no craziness allowed. Everyone else was substantially bigger and I thought there's no way I'll win , they're bound for higher #'s but it'd be nice for the support etc... 30 days later I actually won the bet! I've changed the way I eat and workout daily and I like the new lifestyle, and the vainer part of me likes the attention too!

Keep me posted on how these dreams unfold Glovia.

I know you have the power to anything that you want to do, and it is wonderful to see you embrace that and surge forward.

Thanks, Dean. I love food and running. Therefore, a runner cafe will fit me the most. LOL

I love Whole Food and Panera also. We will have friendly competition.

Now that I am in this thread. Let me try to do a little motivation here.

This Sunday, Jun 1st 2008, 6:30am Pacific Time, I will run the San Deigo Marathon. It is my 2nd time running it. Anyone likes to run with me vitrually?

6:30am Pacific Time = 9:30am Eastern Time (New York) = 7:30am Arizona time.

It will take me at least 4hr30min to complete. Whereever you are, if you happen in the gym running on a treadmill or jogging outdoor, you can imagine that you are running the marathon together with me virtually.

What motivates me is the shape I used to have. For some reason, I kept picturing myself as that normal weight guy I used to be, but then in the past few years the mirror contradicted it. When it turned out that my blood cholesterol is way too high, in spite of my quite healthy diet, I decided it's time to change.

I also do it because it feels great. I was never really into sports and did not realize until recently how much it helps to feel balanced.

Days like today motivate me!

Seeing strength gains like:

-now being able to hoist my arse half-way up to the bar in the pull-up position with a good hold for a few seconds and a slo-mo neg. rep back down), as well as now doing WAY more chin-ups than when I first started.

-blasting through barbell squats, (for the first 25 that is, then it gets more challenging ; )

-pushing myself to do crunches to failure instead of using reps as a goal

And seeing the changes in my shape and size is a real pat on the back too as my back is becoming more V-shaped than ever and my now notably larger pecs are now popping and twitching with every little move my arms make.

It's fun to flex them quickly when I catch dudes staring at my beeeeoobs, heheh...
