My fitness regimen includes stationary cycling, light weight training and lots of walking around NYC. I'm a graduate of WeightWatchers and an enthusiastic advocate of its balanced approach to weight loss. I'm sure that I drink too much coffee and get too little sleep. :)
My goals are to maintain my weight in a healthy BMI/BF % range and forestall the toll of advancing age. :)
I think Traineo's established a great community and appreciate the support and information we share.

What are your favorite fitness-related films?
Two to start: Personal Best and Rocky---the original only, please.

I am 29 years old and have grown passionate about fitness and health! Overall, I have lost and kept off a little over 40 pounds, and I have about 20 or so more that I would like to take off. This last year has been tough and distracting in many ways, and I am back to work now! I am revisiting Traineo, because this site and the people here were instrumental in helping me lose my original 40 pounds so I am back! I regret that because of time constraints I won't be able to be AS active in the forums as I used to, but I will certainly try to stay in there and reconnect with old friend as well as make new ones.
My fitness goals remain the same as before as I haven't achieved them yet: *GOAL 1 = 140 lbs Target Date = 7/31/08 Date Met = TBD CURRENT FITNESS GOALS: Run a 5K, improve flexibility enough to do the splits, be able to do 50 pushups in a row, be able to do a pull-up, learn to do a hand stand and then hand stand pushups. :)

Ahh yes, I am inspired by a lot of movies - even some that may not be strictly fitness related, but are about people who push themselves to their limit to achieve something that they want more than anything else. Most of the time it is the mental block that the characters overcome that is the hardest. After they overcome that, the rest seems to be a breeze. I think it is the same in everything we want to achieve in life - including fitness. The mind is a very powerful thing.
Most high school football movies inspire me, so there would be too many to name here. Other than that, I will vote for a few even though this is by no means a comprehensive list:
Miracle
Cinderella Man
Million Dollar Baby
GI Jane
Cool Runnings

@Jennie W: Some intriguing selections on your list (have seen Jane, but not the others).
It's funny that you mention the power of football-related films...I'm not a big fan of the sport itself, but do like certain movies that have it as a subject, for the reasons you mention... Friday Night Lights, for example, and Any Given Sunday.
One of my favorite scenes from AGS.

@NYCinephile: I own both Friday Night Lights and Any Given Sunday. Both good choices.
Since you like Rocky, you should watch Million Dollar Baby and Cinderella Man as I listed above as well as Against the Ropes. I think boxing movies show individual perseverance, overcoming mental roadblocks and accomplishment the best. I would love your feedback on those after you have watched them.

I've been using a modified Shangri-La Diet (adding portion control to standard SLD) for the past 12 months with good results (-89.4 lbs since May 2006). My SLD dose is two tablespoons of flax oil a day. My favorite thing about this diet is that I'm losing weight without wanting to eat my arm off.

Almost any episode of Alias. Jennifer Garner is ripped in that show. (I suppose she also looks as good in Electra and Daredevil, but I haven't seen those).

My weight has gone up and down repeatedly in the last few years. I managed to lose a lot of weight before getting married 2 years ago, but have since gained most of it back.
I hope to find new motivation on this site, and hopefully make some new friends. This time I want to lose weight and keep it off. I'm trying to not think of it as a diet, but as a change in lifestyle.

Amen brother! Alias was one of my favorite shows on TV. Too bad it was cancelled
If you haven't seen Electra or Daredevil, don't. It will only tarnish the good image of Jennifer Garner for you.

Being insulin resistant, I have had weight issues since childhood. About 3 years ago I was at my heaviest weight at 90kg. Over time with diet and exercise, I brought the weight down to 66kg. Over the past year the weight has slowly crept up to around 73kg. The main reason is that I cheat on my diet. My workout routine: about an hour of step aerobics done to home videos 5 days a week, resistance training at the gym for about an hour each, 4 days a week and and 1 hour of yoga once a week.

If TV shows count, then The Oprah Winfrey Show has been an inspiration. Her 'brother' Bob talks a lot of sense. So does Dr Oz. My motto about not eating aftre 7:30 pm was adopted after seeing her shows. It was one of the diet strategies that helped me shed weight.

I never have time to watch her show, but I must second this. I really admire her honesty about her struggles with weight loss and her willingness to share her journey to a healthy lifestyle with her audience. It's nice to see a public figure who uses their popularity for good.

I netflixed "Running on the Sun" URL
I had never heard of the 135 mile Badwater race. It was a bit hard for me to watch initially as I kept trying to view it in the wee hours of night when the TV is available to me and found myself falling asleep because it is adocumentary and bit dry. But then, my teenage son started watching it one day during the day and I joined him and I was totally inspired. Ordinary folks ..may be not ordinary.. great determination, one of them an amputee.., the power of the human spirit is just plain amazing and always makes me want to do better in life. They run under scorching sun and the scenery is not something that motivates me.. I like green and this is desert land.. but when a runner has to pull out of the race, my heart breaks.
If you rent it and find the beginning boring, don't give up. Please watch it fully. The magnitude of what they are trying to achieve is mind blowing.
To me, running has been teaching me many life lessons.
Next on my Netflix queue is: "Without Limits".

Hi I am Kat, I am seventeen and I started this school year at boarding school. Although it's not college, I have the same problems with living in dorms, going to the school's dining hall, and staying up late finishing work and studying. Luckily I haven't gained the "freshman 15" (like a good majority of my friends have), but I have gained some weight and would like to learn how to eat right in an environment with a wide variety of [mediocre] foods. Have you ever been to a buffet and decided to try a little of each, and before you knew it your plate is piled high? Imagine that for every meal every day! It's a slow learning process but I would love it if you would like to be my motivator. Just message me! : D Thanks

I love the film "Take the Lead". It's inspirational to me in so many ways. I started a ballroom dancing club here at my school, and we've come a long way in such a short time. We now have a pro teacher and are signed up for competitions.
I am really into ballroom dancing and seeing all the exciting dancing and the beautiful bodies has been a great inspiration. If anything, when you think you have to train to look like a ballroom dancer, I think that if you just practice the ballroom dancing itself then the weight comes off. Too bad I can't take more lessons! I have so much fun and don't realize how tired or sweaty I am until I am in the car on my way home.
Try ballroom dancing! It's addicting! ; )

I am 34 years old, married and a father of a 2.5 year old. They are the motivators for me to reach my goal. I started the new journey on 8/21/06 @307 lbs and as of June '08, I have lost around 108 lbs. I have been able to keep 100 lb weight loss since Sept. '07. What keeps me on track is the Traineo community, vision of a healthy and fit future and the mini-goals below. *GOAL 1 = 244 lbs, Date = 2/15/07 Date Met = 2/7/07 *GOAL 2 = 229 lbs, Date = 3/22/07 Date Met = 3/30/07 ________________________ *GOAL 3 = 199 lbs, Date = 6/30/08 Date Met = 6/5/08 *GOAL 4 = 185 lbs, Date = 09/30/08 Date Met = TBD (185 is my "ultimate" goal. Then build muscle.)
Hobbies/Interests: Baseball, White Sox, bowling, WII, Xbox 360, PSP, XM, Opie and Anthony radio show, Ron and Fez radio show, variety of music, working out, running.

Advice: - Set a Deadline: "A goal is a dream with a deadline - Napolean Hill." - Set Mini Goals - They help you accomplish small milestones on your way to the "ultimate" goal. - Track your progress. - Plan everything out. I was gone for awhile, but I'm back and ready to lose the 20 pounds I managed to gain back while I was away. Stupid stressful job. Stupid comfort food.
I'm looking to lose 10 of the 20 by the time I go on my much delayed honeymoon. (June 7th, 2008)
Some background... January 16th, 2006=188 pounds. January 16th, 2007=162 pounds. January 16th, 2008=156 pounds.

A skinny rail -- that's what I was most of my youth. I felt great and had energy to spare.
But in my mid-20's I started to gradually gain weight. Now I'm around 50 lbs. overweight and have been for 10 years. I'd like to be around to see my grandkids someday. Time for a change!

I think this is because of the energy conveyed by fit bodies in powerful, carefully controlled motion.
