A good tip I received today. It really hit close to home because I've done this for years, which is why I'm as big as I am now. Many times I felt angry, sad or depressed and would stuff my face with Taco Bell or McDonald's. For anyone who can relate, this is for you.

"Do you often eat when you are sad or anxious? Many people turn to food for comfort. When food is used to deal with emotions, it is easy to overeat. Identify those emotions when you do overeat and use something else to break the cycle. Try to break this habit by substituting food for something actice such as walking, something soulful such as journaling, or something relaxing like meditation or yoga."

Actually this does hit home and thanks for sharing. Recently though when I have either gotten angry, sad or depressed instead going around and getting something to eat I was thinking I should goto the gym or for a walk.

Although I was just thinking it, it was a big step for me. I didn't go out at all though.

This hits home for me, too. I found that substituting the gym (or some other physical activity) for food worked wonders. Not only are you not taking in all the extra garbage, but you're producing endorphins in the brain when you exercise... combating the depression/anger.

just my 2 cents...

I'm actually giving a talk on Tuesday about emotional eating. It helps to keep a food journal of what you ate in the day, why you ate it, and how you felt afterwords. That way you can reflect on what was a problem spot for you and even journal what you will do next time instead of turn to food. The gym is definitely good, but you could also just get outside for some fresh air, call up a friend to chat, or put on your favorite song and just dance the stress or sadness away! But if you are to eat, try sweet but nutritious carbs like oatmeal with maple syrup, whole wheat toast with jelly, sweet potatoes, or lightly sweetened cereal like Kashi Go Lean Crunch (my fave!). These foods actually combat emotional overeating by being satisfying, filling, and quite yummy

Kashi has some really delicious snacks too! I lovelovelove the Pumpkin Spice Flax crunchy granola bar.

Elicia, I think you're the first nutritionist I've ever heard say to go ahead and eat sometimes. What you say makes perfect sense though.

i tend to eat when i'm anxious too. it's hard to do, but you have to remember when you do go into the kitchen, if you eat something unhealthy, you're very likely to keep eating, because those cookies or chips you reach for are going to spike your blood sugar, and your body will crave it once you stop.

so, although it may be hard, it's better to eat (even if it's a lot) more veggies, and healthy food, because you're more likely to actually get full, and feel satisfied.
