I messed up the diet pretty bad at lunch today and I am super tempted to just right the whole day off and get back to it tomorrow. I really feel like tearing into some M&M's right now. Somebody, please help!

Gosh, I know the feeling. I've eaten SO many bad things today!!! One bad day is okay and I think is recommended, so your body won't get too used to your diet. And as Splint would say, always in moderation....

So it's okay that I messed up?

Go ahead and cheat -- as long as you remember the three-bite rule... only 3 bites of cheating. This way you can still enjoy your favorite foods when the urge comes and not feel terriable afterwards. P.S. Take small bites.

Of course it's okay Rachael...we're all human and mistakes happen.
Just try not to make a habit out of it.

Well, I mean, I know it's okay, but I just feel like I ruined the whole day by eating 2 orange glazed biscuits with my lunch. But I ate the bag of M&M's and downed a whole 1/2 Liter bottle of water and I actually feel pretty full now. Hopefully that will be the end of it.

What was lunch? Yesterday I had a mushroom Swiss burger from Hardies, but that was 80% of my calorie intake for the day.

I was invited out to a really nice club by my boss for a project Christmas luncheon. My healthy choices were very limited, but I did fairly well with the meal - broiled beef (small to medium size serving) with some gravy sauce to dip in, cabbage, and black eyed peas - oh and a couple of small pieces of corn bread. But they had bread that they brought out and some of the bread were these orange drizzled biscuit things and I shouldn't have eaten one, but everybody was talking about how wonderful they are and I ate one, which meant that I ate 2. So I was feeling kinda down about it because I've been doing really well this week.

lol, that is what I was going to say. I don't believe in denying yourself any of the tasty edibles that life has to offer. Eliminating certain foods does not give you mastery over them. The ability to enjoy the foods in moderation shows true mastery.

Ok, so one day you ate too much of some tasty treats. Today I had a crappy workout with no energy and it lacked intensity, so what? Tonight I'm going to do some yoga and get straigtened out and I'm going to set a new deadlift record tomorrow.

Don't let a moment of weakness be your cornerstone for the future.

In moderation with extremely moderate frequency...

Most people that are overweight became that way by eating whatever/whenever they wanted. Don't get caught up in the all or nothing syndrome, because you'll never win.

I did this many times during the years. We begin a weight loss plan and oops, we mess up, we get pissed and we fall off the wagon with our "woe is me" attitude. What about the other millions of times I ate the food and didn't think twice?!!!

Enjoy and be conscious of what you are putting in your mouth. That's the key. Change and REALIZE that you ate the candy, enjoyed it and tomorrow is a new day for your better you. End of story.

I enjoyed 2 slices of greasy pizza yesterday afternoon with a friend. Sure I was upset and ready to throw my arms up, but I went to FitDay, put in my foods and had to bit my tongue and eat very little for the rest of the day. Hard to do? Hell yeah!!

The old me would have thought "enjoy the pizza, tomorrow, the next day and so on and so on..." (Shampoo girl in my mind).

Who does not enjoy food! We are all human. It is OK to enjoy your favorite once a while.

I understand it is hard to keep on the right track during holiday season. Nov and Dec are probably the worst. Thanksgiving, Christmas and then New Year... most of the time, we celebrate them with food and parties.

But, it is a new day tomorrow (Jennifer's code ). We can always get back on track. Let's keep it up.

I doubt you really gained anything Rachael. Don't forget your weight can fluctuate up to 5 pounds from day to day, regardless of how you eat.

But as Jennifer G (THE NEW ME) would say, today is a new day. Glad you're back on the wagon!

By the way, why is Jennifer G now THE NEW ME? That really confused me.

Remember too, Rachael, that it takes time to change ole habits, so if and when you fall off the wagon, always be sure to get right back on as soon as you hear that inner voice naggin', it nags, 'cause it KNOWS.

And yes, when folks change their screen names, I never get used to it. Imagine if we all of a sudden changed our names in the real world?

Heheh, I could change mine to "Me New"...

LOL

You're right Cardio, about one's weight being able to fluctuate by 5 pounds from day to day. Mine did that this week. I was incredibly discouraged until I figured out that it was the old monthly water gain and not my diet. Sure enough, I took it easy and ate light... presto! The 5 pounds were gone as fast as they had shown up... a testament to not getting down (blue) (in need of chocolate) over daily weightings.

It's basically not ok to mess up. If you do mess up, you need to single out the moment as being a mistake. But that's my opinion.

I agree with Splint. I think if you deny yourself all your favorites you will eventually fall off the wagon. Moderation is the key, and keep the bad stuff frequency to a minimum.

We all mess up, but like was said many times, get back up, dust yourself off and don't give up.

One other thing that I would add is, don't wait till the next day to get back on the wagon, do it immediately. If you give up for the rest of the day that is when old habits can sneak back up on you. I know this is much harder than it sounds because it is amazing how the cravings come back once you have slipped up.

Jump on the wagon and hold on!

That's great advice Tim. I'm really trying hard to be good while I'm at my folk's place over Christmas, but it's really tough. I think I'm doing better than "bad habits Rachael" but not really good if that makes any sense.

If you're gonna cheat, use a backup plan! Drink extra amounts of water to flush the calories thin. Then, if you have anytime that day/night, work it off with a little exercise.
