we probably could make long lists about what we hate about the gym, so ever think about what you like/love about it?

I like getting there really early (not really,lol-but if I have to-I like being one of the few ones in the gym and having the gym almost all to myself.
I like sweating-alot!
I like being done with my workout-that feeling of accomplishment!
I like seeing someone workout really hard (and doing it the right way/form) and sweat really hard-it motivates me to work harder/want to be like that.
I like seeing someone making progress.
I like knowing that what im doing is changing my body and is healthy for myself.

Hmm..what else?What do you like/love about the gym/working out?

I like:
The girls
The plethora of machines and free weights
The staff (they're cool, in 20's and give us free stuff)
The people (they will go up to you if you're doing "it" wrong)
The price ($350 for 18months)
The pain of a good workout
The sauna after a hard workout
The results

give us free stuff

Which gym is it that give you free stuff?

I like to go to gym only becuase it has equipments that I don't have at home. Or, when I cannot run outdoor in rainy days, I run on the treadmill in the gym.

May be my gym is not very good. I don't think the trainers there are fit. Quite a few of them are over weighted. I am not sure how they can motivate people.

I've now seriously started thinking to actually join a gym... but it is really expensive. I don't have a car though so I can't get there whenever... and I don't really like going on my own, my partner might come with me. Still, it is really expensive.

All I know is I MISS MY OLE GYM. Now, the only one in my town is lamely equipped, far away and not open when I need it. Kickin'... : /

I used to just LOVE the spread of gear to use and being surrounded by focused, driven do-ers.

I see gyms as a neccessary thing, but I can't say I love them much. I love the great outdoors and often love training in my own solitude.

Gyms are too busy and full of pretentious people that hog up all the equipment. Yuk!!

The best gym is a pair of boots, a good rucksack and a mountain!! Short of that, just get outside and start sweating!!

P.S - I'm pleased as punch, cos I did a 2 mile run last night for the first time since late August!!!! I'm running again, and my ankle is healing!!!!

Good news. Enjoy the return.

And I agree with you, Dean, while I appreciate a well-equipped gym, I too take great pleasures on the trails, in the sea, lakes--even pavement on a crisp and bright day like this one.

And pooch just makes it better.

Dean that's awesome. You've inspired me toward a new goal: to be able to run 2 miles. It's not the breathing that gets me, it's these legs/feet. I need to get custom running shoes made so my leg won't feel like it's about to fall off after I run 100 yards.

Oh, and I also like the gym because there's always (well, most of the time) at least one trainer or person who looks like I want to look, so it serves as motivation. But lately there have been a lot of overweight trainers in my gym, and not the healthy football player kind of overweight. It's the "they need to workout more than I do" overweight. What's that about?

Gratz, Dean! You'll be knocking out that goal in no time now

Curtis, you might want to check out the couch to 5k program - it's a 9 week program to get up to running 5k (3.1mi). I will be starting that next year!

deans inspires me too! curtis- i have orthotics in my sneakers but you can get inserts from the drug store that might help. and about the trainer-anyone can get a certification-im not at all putting trainers down but it doesnt matter what you look like-years ago i got certified as a trainer and i was very overweight. it doesnt take alot to get certified. thats not to say there arent very qualified trainers and im not trying to put myself down either but all you need to do is take a course.

Oh, and I love the gym! I'm lucky enough to have one where the people are not that pretentious, and some seem to really know what they're doing. Going there with my workout buddies really inspires me to get a good workout because that is what the place is for. Also, I'm starting to become a 'regular' and the people there recognize that; it's a good feeling!

When I started doing my bodyweight exercises it was because I realized my gym routine had become stagnant and I wasn't giving it full intensity.

That's why I started the pull-up/push-up/squat routine this summer, to get out of the gym. I started going to a very nice park on the way to work that had pull-up bars and other exercise equipment along with a track around the whole thing that's like 3 miles long. Just being outside in the morning air, seeing deer in the field while working out made a big difference. Eventually I started going back to the gym with a renewed focus. Lifting weights became a method to improve my bodyweight exercises and I had a renewed vigor for it. So when I go to the gym and lift weights, I look forward to it because it's helping me meet my goal of completing all 8 levels of the bodyweight program.

Cheers for the support guys, I am truly psyched!!

Curtis - You will run 2 miles no problem. The first step is making the intention, closely followed by putting it out there. The likes of yourself is truly inspiring to me also. The size of your goal can not be measured against everyone elses standards it is about pushing your own limits, and your strength of attitude is phenomenal. Keep it up!!

Also, Jennifer G is holding me accountable for my training at the moment and I want to tell you all that she is doing a superb job!! Thanks for investing your time and energy in my direction, I truly appreciate it!!

I love:
-Trying new things/lifts/routines
-'Finding' new muscles after a particularly rough workout
-feeling satisfied with the workout, but keep going

Jennifer, I've tried inserts from the store before, but they didn't help much. I might give them another try though. I really think it hurts to run because I'm so heavy and my legs just aren't used to it. I used to run track and never had leg problems.

Couch to 5k you say? Hmm...I'm intrigued!

1) Always seeing somebody at the gym with a figure to aspire to
2) You're paying for the gym, so you might as well use it. It's plain financial sense.
3) Girls of course
4) TVs on the machines so I can run for miles while watching basketball or Ninja Warrior

dean-you are welcome-glad i can help. funny you just wrote that b/c i just emailed asking how i was doing.

drew-i like the finding the new muscle-thats a great one-i love encountering muscles i never knew i had

curtis-i thought the same thing too-it does hurt your body to run when you are heavy but it does get a little easier as time goes on-not that im so experienced-im only able to run a mile. also, real custom orthotics prescribed by a doc probably are your best bet but maybe try a diff type of insert first and see if one of those can help.

rick-omg-where do you live that you get a gym so cheap?!!!

Yea I'm gonna find some inserts either tonight or tomorrow and try 'em out on Friday. I'm going to *TRY* to start running a little bit and get myself ready, and I'll start my couch to 5k program next week. WOO!
