(I originally posted this in the JUDDDD forum, but only got one response, so I'm sorry if you're reading it again. Anyway...)

How do you all deal with being impatient and down on yourself?

I've been Juddding for 4 weeks. In that time, I've lost 9.5 pounds. Part of me realizes this is excellent, but the other just gets frustrated with how far I have to go, and how much I've let myself go.

In the past, 9.5 pounds was about 1/3 - 1/2 of my total weight loss goal. Now it's 1/5. Best case scenario, I have at least 4 more months until I get to my goal. I also realize that at my weight of 182, I still weigh more than I did the last time I seriously went clothes shopping and the last time I saw a good amount of extended family this summer, who commented on my weight gain.

How do you stay motivated and relish in your weight loss, even though you may have a long way to go? How do you forgive yourself for letting yourself go in the first place? How do you reward yourself?

try setting small goals and after you meet them then reward yourself with something other than food. remember to stop and give yourself credit for how far youve come. remember this is something you are going to stick with for life so try to come up with exercises and foods you like to do/eat so you can maintain it. remember if you slip, its okay, you are human. just get back on track and start up again right away. i hope that helps.

We didn't get overweight and out of shape overnight so we're not going to reverse it overnight either. You have to take it one step (or pound) at at time. Make several goals along the way...when I started this, I was 55 pounds overweight. I've already reached the halfway mark (a goal) and if all goes well this week, I'll be sub-200 for the first time in 10 years (another goal). Am I where I need to be? Not yet...but I'm no longer classified as "Obese" on the BMI chart (another goal) either.
We will get there...it just takes time and effort.

Jennifer is right, you need to find a way to celebrate the small successes along the way.

Also it'll help you to break the goal down. In real terms 4 months is tiny.

Good luck

As obvious as that *should* be, that's a really good way to put weight loss into perspective. Thanks

I agree with Dean and Jennifer.
You just have to find little things to get happy about.
I get happy everyday when I realize that I ate relatively well or if I worked out. One day at a time works for me.

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. I get so discouraged too because I feel like the weight is not coming off quick enough. There are some days where I felt like the sacrifices should account for at least 10 lbs! A friend told me once to think of what a pound of butter looks like and to realize that that's what is gone from my body (I like to picture my butt in the scenario). So, in one month you lost 9 pounds of butter! That's great! I know the end seems far, but, like everyone else has written, celebrate the pounds of butter you are losing until the end!

Good luck, my fellow butter mutilator!

Breaking it down to smaller goals like Jen said is a good start.

I did that, and I know what you mean by impatience because every time I reach my goal, I set a new one right up that my Traineo doesn't even have time to say "goal met" (and it never actually did yet because I keep pushing myself before I reach my goals).

But when you get into a routine and see weight come off steadily and consistently, you start to not care as much (well in my case anyways, or maybe because I'm nearing the end) and you enjoy the fitness aspect and the health aspect and then the number on the scale becomes a bonus.

After making mini goals, make mini rewards too to help you, like having some dark chocolate or something (work it in your food calorie intake though) or buying clothes.

I finally got jeans, one size smaller than what I was last year. It was great.

Brittany, JUDDD is a way of life. I have lost 54 lbs since Jan 07. I have a sparkpeople.com team "Friends of Dr. Johnson" if you want to hear some success stories...Bug

it is easy to get impatient. we all want the quick fix and to lose the weight yesterday. ive been up and down all of my life and been losing now since 2000-2002 (?). g-d it seems like forever if i think about it. 5-7 years!! years!!!! thats alot of time but im determined now to reach my goals and am by far not perfect. what has helped me is to remind myself of my progress, to not beat up on myself, to reward myself, to keep resetting goals, to be held accountable (i.e check into traineo), to keep progressing even if i have setbacks (dont let a lapse become a relapse), to keep challenging myself, and to only compare myself to myself (only compete with self). some days its tough. some days it isnt. sometimes you have to be your own cheering squad and do alot of self-motivating/self-talk to get you through. other days are easy. the rewards are worth it.

I think having a supporting group like traineo definitely help. When I am down, I chat with folks like you guys. It can pull me back on the right track. Then, the next day, I work out harder. Watch out my diet carefully.

Exactly! I wish my mind is always stronger than my body. Losing weight or changing eating habit is a journey. I do gone thru emotional up and down. I need both support and motivation.

I can sympathise with this thread quite heavily as patience is not one of my virtues. I am nursing an injury at the moment, and I feel like I don't have time to wait for it to heal and am pulling my hair out to get back to the grind. Course there are things I can do, and I am, put I'm still IMPATIENT.

What I would add is this. From my experience my drive to get there faster normally means it takes longer. I am constantly learning that patience is the QUICKEST route, as with most things in life when you think about it. Rushing causes mistakes. Rushing compromises quality. Striving impairs recovery. The body doesn't take kindly to rapid change. I know this, but still I push myself so I know how you feel.

Nice post Dean. You said things I didn't even realize I needed to hear, but I'm glad I did. Thanks!

Reve, how are things now?

Amen, Dean. I too am slowly getting back into my routine after some notable back woes.

I can't tell ya how GOOD it felt to run again today, how much my heart was thriving in the rhythm, how the sweat, (I over-estimated the weather!), was pouring from me as I peeled off the shell layer and made a mental note to wear my contacts next time as my glasses fogged up.

And my dog, in all his disciplined glory was so obviously pleased to be trotting along side me by the river again.

For me, one of the many rewards of fitness is having a nice, low resting heart rate & BP, and simply being ABLE to do the things that I want to DO.

Nice code, Dean!

A few months ago, I push myself very hard to run and got injured on my hip joint. The only way to heal is to rest. Many have told me to rest and I was just not patient. I rest 1 day. As soon as I felt better, I ran again. The problem came back. Then, I rest 2 days and ran again. The problem cam back,…I ended up losing a few weeks from such cycle.

I tried JUDDDD and failed miserably. I felt like crap everyday, and ate like a pig. I just stuck to 200 calorie restriction and I'm losing weight pretty rapidly.
